Together - Daily DevotionalSample

A promised companion
It was traditional for Jews to celebrate Passover with a special meal during which they ate unleaven bread and other foods to specifically remind them of their time in Egypt. There were set songs and an element of teaching with a review of the Biblical narrative of their escape from slavery. One of the features of the very first Passover story was not just of the power of God but the immanent presence of God. God had not simply used His power to deliver His people from slavery but actually to live with them (Exod.29:44-46). When the Israelites were stubborn, God told Moses that He would not journey with them but send an angel instead. Moses insisted that it was God Himself who should accompany them and God acceded to his request (Exod.33:1-17).
Jesus had been with the disciples for three years and knew that His death was imminent. But He promised that another “just like him” would be with them in the future to be their companion. This promise of the Holy Spirit at Passover shows that God longs for intimacy and companionship not just empowerment. It is God the Holy Spirit who is our companion on our life’s journey!
Prayer: Holy Spirit I thank You that You are my ever present companion to help, comfort, encourage and strengthen me
