Passover Lamb
Christian Easter and Jewish Passover usually coincide because they are based on the same lunar cycle. Jesus was crucified during the Jewish Passover in the spring and it is thought Christians adapted an existing spring festival to commemorate His crucifixion. The egg is an ancient symbol of new life and rebirth. In Christianity it became associated with Jesus' death and resurrection and the early Christian community stained eggs red in memory of Jesus blood.
It was the blood of the sacrificed Passover lamb that saved Israelites from death in the last plague when they applied it to the horizontal and vertical sides of the door frame (Exod.12:21-23). To merely observe the sacrifice of a lamb would have been insufficient – they had to choose in faith to follow God’s instructions to apply its blood to their home for them to be saved. The sacrifice of our Passover lamb, Jesus, on the horizontal and vertical beams of the cross, is insufficient to save us unless that we apply that sacrifice by choosing in faith to follow Him.
But Passover, great as it was, was only the first step for the people to journey into the Promised Land of God’s blessings!
Prayer: Lord Jesus, I choose by faith to follow You into all that God has for me!
