DAY 122 OF 366

Passover

No consideration of Easter would be complete without reference to its Jewish roots in the Old Testament.  The Jewish people had sought refuge in Egypt from a famine many years before.  It was Joseph who had saved Egypt and the surrounding nations from destruction by his plan of storing the harvest of the good years to provide food in the years of famine.  After 400 years the debt to the Jews was forgotten and the Egyptians forced them into slavery and hard labour. Because of His love for them, God was concerned about their suffering and determined to rescue them (Exod.3:7-8). He sent a man called Moses to deliver them from oppression but the Egyptian ruler Pharaoh refused to release them.

God brought several plagues on the Egyptians to persuade Pharaoh but he still would not grant God’s people their freedom. Eventually God sent a plague which caused all the firstborn of humans and livestock to perish.  However the Lord protected His people from the deadly plague because He “passed over” the Israelites houses and cattle.

We too are captives to many forms of sin, oppression and addiction but the Lord sent a man, Jesus to set us free! (John 8:31-36, 2 Tim.2:26)

Prayer: Thank You Lord that Your judgement has passed over me to release me into freedom in Jesus
