This is the question addressed in 1 John, the letter we shall dive deep into in this plan. John writes in 1 John in the wake of a schism in the churches he oversees to help Christians like you and me navigate this leading question: what makes genuine Christianity genuine, and what are the features of false Christianity, and how can we tell the difference?

These works are likely penned by the apostle John, written to a known community of believers and to specific individuals within this community. John wrote to combat false teaching by re-anchoring believers in the truth of Jesus Christ and giving guidance on how to live in love as children of God.

John writes to believers caught in the aftermath, bringing clarity and commentary on what he wrote.
