Poqomchi’, Western (pob) Guatemala The Population of 50,000 Poqomchi’ live in the region of Alta Verapaz area around San Cristobal. The alternate names for the language are Pocomchí, Pokomchí, Poqomchi’, Western, and Western Pocomchí. The dialect is Santa Cruz Verapaz Poqomchi’. The language classification is Mayan, Quichean-Mamean, Greater Quichean, Pocom. The language is used by all ages groups. Language development includes literacy work with Poqomchi’ being done in the primary schools. A dictionary and a grammar as well as Bible portions have been produced. This ISO 639-3 code has been retired after the publication of Ethnologue, 16th edition. The new code will be (poh). The writing system is in the Latin script.
