Day 2: You Will See Jesus!

“I will not leave you as orphans; I will come to you. Before long, the world will not see me anymore, but you will see me. Because I live, you also will live. On that day you will realize that I am in my Father, and you are in me, and I am in you. Whoever has my commands and keeps them is the one who loves me. The one who loves me will be loved by my Father, and I too will love them and show myself to them.” John 14:18-21

Dear friends,

I recently had a life-changing realization. While on a trip for a conference, I found myself with a quiet moment in the hotel lobby before the day began. I opened my Bible to the passage above, and although I had read it many times, this time was different. The Holy Spirit illuminated it in a fresh, powerful way. (Don’t you just love how He does that?!)

The phrases I italicized in the verse above are not metaphorical; they are literal promises.

They are just as certain as Jesus’ words in John 10:27:

“My sheep listen to my voice; I know them, and they follow me.”

Jesus says we will see Him. He promises to come to us and show Himself to us.

As He often does, the Holy Spirit confirmed this word through different moments in the days that followed. One was during a conversation with a dear friend in the middle of a personal crisis. I was passionately encouraging her about how vital it is to hear God’s voice, especially during times of hardship.

At the time of this writing, my husband Mike and I have walked through a fire of tribulation these past two years after his brain tumor diagnosis. And yet, through it all, Jesus has been so near. These have been some of the most challenging yet precious years of our lives.

If you’ve followed my writing, you know how passionate I am about hearing God’s voice—because I first began to hear Him during my greatest moment of need. His presence and love have carried me through deep valleys, and He continues to reveal more of His heart to me each day. (And friend, His heart beats with love for you, too!)

But during that conversation with my friend, something struck me powerfully: Before I ever heard God’s voice like I do now... I saw Him. I saw Him in the Spirit, which is how many people see Him.

And just like hearing His voice, seeing Jesus was deeply transformative. I had somehow overlooked this when telling my story. Maybe because seeing Him felt so natural from the beginning. Perhaps it’s the same for you?

-Maybe you’ve already seen Him and didn’t even realize it.
-Maybe you’ve seen Him for as long as you can remember.
-Or maybe you haven’t seen Him yet—but your heart is longing to.

Whichever it is, I invite you to come along on this journey. Because, dear one, you are about to encounter, experience, know, and love Jesus in a whole new way—by seeing Him.
