Jesus demonstrates the importance of meeting physical needs as well as the importance of sharing the Gospel. Often, as churches or individuals, we can be really good at doing the "nice thing", but we are lacking when it comes to sharing the gospel while we are serving. People couldn't find salvation in the fish and loaves, nor can people find salvation in your charitable acts. Salvation can only be found in Christ. If we are not sharing the gospel, then all of the kind deeds we do are essentially in vain. It's better for someone to go to heaven hungry than go to hell with a full belly.
