The Strength of Obedience

DAY 3 OF 6

God had a plan for Jesus’ life—a plan that would ultimately bring salvation to the world! But this passage makes something strikingly clear: Jesus did not like the plan. As He walked the earth in human flesh, He cried out to His Father with deep anguish, even begging that the plan might be changed. The Son of God did not want to suffer crucifixion. He did not long for pain, humiliation, or death. Instead, He pleaded with “loud cries and tears” for another way.

This is one of the most overlooked truths about Jesus. We often picture Him as above the struggle, detached from the agony of obedience, almost as if following God’s will came effortlessly for Him because He was also God. But the writer of Hebrews tells us plainly—Jesus wrestled. He begged. He cried out. His obedience was not robotic but costly!

And yet, what marked His life was “reverent submission.” Even though His heart longed for another way, Jesus entrusted Himself fully to His Father. In that obedience, He was heard! The second truth this passage gives us is perhaps even more staggering: Jesus learned obedience. Think about that! The eternal Son of God, the One who spoke creation into existence, humbled Himself to the point of entering into human weakness and pain. And in that humility, He learned what it meant to obey through suffering.

Jesus’ willingness to learn obedience through suffering was not just for His sake—it was for ours. He showed us that obedience to God is not about ease but about trust. He proved that submission to the Father, even when it leads through the valley of pain, is the very path that leads to redemption, joy, and glory!

So when your life feels heavy, when God’s plan seems hard, or when obedience feels more like loss than gain, remember Jesus. Remember that even He had to learn obedience through suffering. And because He did, He not only knows your struggle—He walks with you in it.

Reflection Question: If Jesus had to learn obedience through suffering, what is God teaching you about obedience through your current circumstances?
