Signs and wonders won't make you believe
I think it is so interesting that despite all the signs and miracles Jesus performed while He was with us really didn't mean a thing.
Why do I say that? Because each time you turn around you read in that the people still kept asking for signs so they would believe.
Hello! what did Jesus have to do to prove to the people that He was who He said He was.
Not even His death on the cross and resurrection from the grave was enough, they wanted more.
So as I set here this night, I wonder how many of us came to know the Lord by just the simple witness from other believers.
I know that is how I came to Christ. There was no signs or wonders performed. When I first started going to church, it was not because of anything else except a girl. Yep, that why I went.
I really don't think I heard much of the sermon, I was just plain to busy with wanting her attention. Even if a miracle took place, I probably would have missed it.
The people back in the time the Jesus walked this earth is no different from what I kinda explained above. They seen the Lord, heal the sick, raise people from the dead, fed over 5000 people with their families from two fishes and some bread, that couldn't even feed a family of two, and yet they didn't believe. It like, I saw what He did, but come on, that was so yesterday, what are you going to show me today to believe in you.
Then there are the people who speak as if they believe, but they don't and it can be seen in their actions. You know what I am talking about.
There was a story, I think I heard it from Pastor Greg Laurie, when a man on death row as being taken to chair, that the priest or Pastor was praying or giving him his last rites. It was so nonchalant and memorized with no feeling to his words, that the prisoner turned around and ask him if he really believed in what he was saying.
I don't know what the minster rely was, but I think he really didn't care and believe as much as he lead onto.
So lets go back a few paragraphs. Did you come to Christ because of signs or a miracle performed? Like I said, I did not, be that night I gave my life to Jesus, I can testify there was an easy feeling running through me. I don't recall of what the Pastor was speaking on some 35 years ago, but the strange feeling within me made me feel very uneasy as I walked out the back door of the sanctuary.
What happen next was the shocker. The Pastor quickly completed his message and before I knew it, he was already outside of the building in the parking lot ready to speak with me.
within a short time, in the church parking lot and our talk, I gave my life to Jesus. No signs or miracle, just Gods word.
I learned that night the truth about Gods word being sharper than a two edge sword, cutting through my very soul. Like I said, no signs, wonders or miracle a simple sermon on Jesus.
If Gods word can touch me, why couldn't all the miracles He did back then only touch so few?
The answer of course follows as the words from Isaiah prophesied about:
Lord, who has believed our message? To whom has the Lord revealed His powerful arm?
The simple fact no one! Many of these people back than were the same as we are today. They jumped on the bandwagon thinking it was popular to say I am following Jesus. But the first sign of problems, they are gone.
"Oh I tried this Jesus thing, it didn't work out."
or "I thought being a follower of Christ or a Christian, all my troubles would disappear."
Or "I need a miracle to believe"
Come on, lets get real here. I think the best example of signs being done for today's society is already well documented in Revelation. With all the signs and pouring out of God's judgement on the land, we study that the people who are left on the earth didn't change their belief pattern, in fact they turn and curse God!
Curse God? For what, for trying to get our attention before the passing the judgement we read about and study about? God didn't want to do what He is going to do, but His patience's finally ran out.
You see what it comes down to is not signs or wonders, but to listen to that small voice within you telling you who Jesus is. That small voice that we keep ignoring is the Holy Spirit speaking to us, but the problem is our eyes and ears deceive us. What we can't see is unbelievable even if we did see.
The simple fact is that everything we read about in Gods word is true. You want a sign, see what His word states. The people, through the Holy Spirit, wrote the bible and were witnesses to all the Lord did before His ascension to His Father. That is your sign.
It is up to us Christian, and I am not talking about the ones who claim they are but really not, to spread the truth of God word.
Asked Him to put the correct words in your mouth to reach these as many people as you can. Not in a condemning way as w see some of these street preachers, but in a loving way as Jesus did.
Look at how He handle the woman at the well. Was there a miracle or sign performed? Of course not. Did He condemn her? Of course not.
He just talked to her, in a loving manner. She saw there was something different in Him.
Look at her response after Jesus asked her for a drink of water:
The woman was surprised, for the Jews refuse to have anything to do with the Samaritans (John 4: 9)
Not only was the Samaritans outcast, she was also an outcast of her own people, yet Jesus struck up a conversation with her.
For people to know Jesus, we need to be as Jesus. We need to do all that He has taught us, still is teaching us and pass it along to others. We can't pick or choice to speak to one person and not another because of who they are. Just remember that our mission is to reach all with the Good News of Jesus.
A true Christian will fellow this pattern Jesus set up, first dying to oneself and their prejudice and pride and tell others about Him, because Jesus does not want any of His creation to die.
Surrender yourself to Christ in your walk and allow the Holy Spirit work with you in placing a seed within an unbeliever. No miracles or signs or wonders, just His word. Because signs will not bring people into His fold, the word shows us that already.
What will bring them into Jesus fold? Faith!!
Like Jesus said "Because you have seen Me you believe? Blessed are they who have not seen yet believe (John 20:29)
Yes, the word is what will bring people to Jesus. No signs or wonders, just the simple truth being brought by true believers and followers of Jesus.
You plant the seed, someone else will water and God will bring forth the fruit.
Trust in the Lord and just follow his ways. Then His word will soften some of the hardest hearts you may know.
