Philippians 3:12-16 Pressing on- The Upward Call of Christ; Nick Swan
We love seeing people give themselves in a dedicated way.
Philippians 3:12-16 ESV
Not that I have already obtained this or am already perfect, but I press on to make it my own, because Christ Jesus has made me his own. Brothers, I do not consider that I have made it my own. But one thing I do: forgetting what lies behind and straining forward to what lies ahead, I press on toward the goal for the prize of the upward call of God in Christ Jesus. Let those of us who are mature think this way, and if in anything you think otherwise, God will reveal that also to you. Only let us hold true to what we have attained.
We don't just wake up one day and decide we will now pursue Christ with all zeal. Because Christ has laid hold of us, we press in to fully lay hold of Christ.
LAYING HOLD OF CHRIST
Paul wants to attain a full fellowship with Christ. He knows it is a daily process that won't be made complete until eternal life.
Gaining Christ was the sole effort of Paul's life. HE HAD TO HAVE & KNOW CHRIST!!!
He wants to make Christ his own, because Christ had made him his own.
Sometimes we diminish how dramatic and life-changing conversion truly is.
Conversion makes us truly alive. It turns us from God haters to God lovers. The glory of God grips us in a way that we have a massive desire to pursue Christ above all other things.
WE DESPERATELY WANT MORE OF JESUS. When Jesus lays hold of us, he seizes us from death to life.
RUNNING THE RACE
Runners focus on what they are running towards. Christ is at the finish line, and Christ beckons us to come.
Is knowing Jesus the goal of my life?
Is Jesus the prize all of my life is running towards?
The prize of all our Christian efforts is Jesus himself.
How hard do I work to grow in my love and affection for Christ?
Do I use every effort of my being?
Sanctification requires hard work, that doesn't earn but rather confirms. That power that raised us, is the power that enables us to follow Christ more fully. If we want to run towards Christ we must have a singular focus.
What am I filling my life with now that on my deathbed I will look at as rubbish?
If we don't think maturely in any way God will reveal it to his saints.
We never stop trusting that God will reveal his faithfulness to lay hold of us.
He never stops laying hold of us.
He began a work in us and will bring it to completion.
