Mickey Connolly: Immanuel (God with us)
Matthew 1:18-25 ESV
Now the birth of Jesus Christ took place in this way. When his mother Mary had been betrothed to Joseph, before they came together she was found to be with child from the Holy Spirit. And her husband Joseph, being a just man and unwilling to put her to shame, resolved to divorce her quietly. But as he considered these things, behold, an angel of the Lord appeared to him in a dream, saying, “Joseph, son of David, do not fear to take Mary as your wife, for that which is conceived in her is from the Holy Spirit. She will bear a son, and you shall call his name Jesus, for he will save his people from their sins.” All this took place to fulfill what the Lord had spoken by the prophet: “Behold, the virgin shall conceive and bear a son, and they shall call his name Immanuel” (which means, God with us). When Joseph woke from sleep, he did as the angel of the Lord commanded him: he took his wife, but knew her not until she had given birth to a son. And he called his name Jesus.
It is human nature to lose awe after hearing something multiple times.
GOD WITH US
In heaven everything is perfect and yet Jesus chose to come to us and to be with us. THE WORTHY GOD CHOSE TO BE WITH THE UNWORTHY.
Incarnation means to become flesh.
God with us??? How can this be???
This child has no human father, but is conceived of the holy spirit.
ONE PERSON, TWO DISTINCT NATURES
Remaining what he was, he became what he was not.
Jesus was fully divine and fully man.
Jesus took on a human nature, and suffered hunger and thirst and sorrow. He was with us in that he also became like us, but without sin.
But why would God do such a thing? Why would he become one of us?
He had to be like one of us in every respect to become the great high priest.
Jesus not only had to make an atoning sacrifice but also be the atoning sacrifice as only he is perfect.
To save us God had to do this, but he did not need to save us. He had to punish us, but chose to save us instead.
"Christ taking flesh was a pure design of love" Thomas Watson
There is a PS to the Christmas story.
He ascended, but never ceases to be with us.
God is always with us to the end of the age!
We will be with him always!!!
The dwelling place of God is with man forever.
