the words of eternal life
As Peter in his confession says, "Lord, where will we go, you have the words of eternal life." so here Jesus makes plain that all the words he has been commanded to speak by the Father to the Jews and the Greeks present were to give them eternal life. On the last day those very words of eternal life which they rejected would be their judge that light came into the world to save them, but they rejected the light of eternal life because they loved darkness. Jesus repeatedly tells them on his Father's authority to believe in him so that they may walk in the light, know where they are going, be saved, become sons of light, but they continue to question and bluster and make excuses and to disbelieve. He does not judge them, but when they are judged, by their own exposure to the gospel and rejection of it, they would receive what they asked for--darkness. So it was also with many of the authorities who believed and realized he was the Christ, but for fear of the pharisees did not confess his name, but pretended and kept silent so they would not lose their societal status, for they loved the glory of man more than the glory of God. They loved darkness instead of light. What they loved dictated what they believed rather than the other way around. Instead of being the servants of Christ who hate their life on earth to gain eternal life, who are with their master in his sufferings and rejection, following him where ever he goes and desiring to be honored by the Father, they align themselves with the world, preferring honor from other people rather than honor from the Father.
