Water from the Rock

1Then all the congregation of the sons of Israel journeyed by #17:1 Lit their journeyingsstages from the wilderness of Sin, according to the #17:1 Lit mouthcommand of Yahweh, and they camped at Rephidim, and there was no water for the people to drink. 2Therefore the people contended with Moses and said, “Give us water that we may drink.” And Moses said to them, “Why do you contend with me? Why do you test Yahweh?” 3But the people thirsted there for water; and #17:3 Lit the peoplethey grumbled against Moses and said, “Why, now, have you brought us up from Egypt, to put #17:3 Lit meus and #17:3 Lit myour children and #17:3 Lit myour livestock to death with thirst?” 4So Moses cried out to Yahweh, saying, “What shall I do to this people? A little more and they will stone me.” 5Then Yahweh said to Moses, “Pass before the people and take with you some of the elders of Israel; and take in your hand your staff with which you struck the Nile, and go. 6Behold, I will stand before you there on the rock at Horeb; and you shall strike the rock, and water will come out of it, that the people may drink.” And Moses did so in the sight of the elders of Israel. 7So he named the place #17:7 Lit testMassah and #17:7 Lit quarrelMeribah because of the contending of the sons of Israel, and because they tested Yahweh, saying, “Is Yahweh among us or not?”

Israel Overwhelms Amalek

8Then Amalek came and fought against Israel at Rephidim. 9So Moses said to Joshua, “Choose men for us and go out, fight against Amalek. Tomorrow I will take my stand on the top of the hill with the staff of God in my hand.” 10And Joshua did as Moses #17:10 Lit said totold him, to fight against Amalek; and Moses, Aaron, and Hur went up to the top of the hill. 11So it happened when Moses raised his hand up, that Israel prevailed, and when he let his hand #17:11 Lit restdown, Amalek prevailed. 12But Moses’ hands were heavy. Then they took a stone and put it under him, and he sat on it; and Aaron and Hur supported his hands, one on one side and one on the other. Thus his hands were steady until the sun set. 13So Joshua #17:13 Lit weakenedoverwhelmed Amalek and his people with the edge of the sword.

14Then Yahweh said to Moses, “Write this in #17:14 Lit the booka book as a memorial and #17:14 Lit place it in the ears ofrecite it in Joshua’s hearing, #17:14 Or forthat I will utterly blot out the memory of Amalek from under heaven.” 15And Moses built an altar and named it Yahweh is My Banner; 16and he said, “Because He has sworn with a hand upon the throne of Yah, Yahweh will have war against Amalek from generation to generation.”
