Follow Jesus 

What does it mean to follow Jesus? Following Jesus means a relationship with our loving Creator. It means striving after a Christlike character. The relationship that Jesus offers is full of unconditional love, sacrifice, and community. Jesus invites us, just as he has to the man in this story, into His life. Into a life where we engage with Him. Where we converse with God, seek His will, and walk in accordance with His Word. 

In Matthew 19:16-22, Jesus tells a rich man what it takes to receive eternal life. He tells the man to keep the commandments such as loving ones parents, not committing murder and loving God and others. The man tells Jesus that he has done all of these things yet he still lacks something. The key to living a life worthy of our calling isn’t to follow all of the laws and commandments as close as we can. These things are important,  but Jesus follows them up by challenging the man to put God first, suggesting that what might be in his way is what he is holding onto (in his case, wealth, security and success).
