Our Shepherd Became Our Passover Lamb
What happened 3500 years ago that we're still talking about it today?
-Israelites grew in number and caused fear in Pharaoh, so they oppressed them in slavery to make them weaker; God then wanted to make them "separate"
Exodus 7-10 Plagues
1)Water to blood (fish will die and land will stink) for 7 days
5) Dead livestock
9) Darkness for 3 days
10) Death of the firstborn (for Egypt and even israelites if they didn't have faith)
-But they could be preserved by the Passover lamb
-Exodus 12:3-6 have to take a lamb, roast, and consume all of the lamb; had to be a firstborn male lamb; keep til 14th day and kill at twilight and put blood on door posts on the house where it was eaten
-Why did they do this? Because they had faith in doing what God asked
-Exodus 12:8 lamb is dying as a substitution for someone in that home
-Exodus 12:11 Had to be ready to travel because they're about to leave Egypt
-Exodus 12:15 eat unleavened bread
Leaven throughout scriptures is a representation of sin- they had to remove ALL leaven out of the house, swept out crumbs, then father would search with a candle to make sure no trace of leaven could be found anywhere; We today have some leaven that needs to be cleaned out, swept out, and wiped down
-It did no good to have blood on the posts of there was leaven in the house
Flash forward 1500 years to annual Passover event
-They're expecting the Messiah to be some great big king or warrior but are told about a lamb
-John 1:29-"Behold the Lamb of God who takes away the son of the world!"
-Luke 22:7-23 Jesus Celebrated the Passover
-Day of unleavened bread; institutes Lords supper- Jesus is the bread has no sin in it, cup is new covenant and his blood is what will be shed
1 Corinthians 5:7-8
-Passover language metaphors used:
Purge out old leaven (sin) and become unleavened (like Christ); Let's keep the feast (Christianity); Everyday of our life is the Passover if you're a Christian because everyday you are purging sin and partaking in the feast
