Person of Interest: Lamech
Here is our first clue that something is wrong with Lamech; he has TWO wives. This is a distortion of God's design for marriage.
In verse 23 he brags to his wives about murdering a man. He had allowed sin to corrupt his thinking.
- If one wife is good, two must be better.
- If it feels right (even though it violates God's law) then it must be right for me to do.
American society today does the same. It's a slippery slope that leads to deeper and deeper sin because we move further from God's word. Each generation is taught the standard of their parents and so each generation moves further from God's Word.
The Bible is the written standard by which all things are measured against. Don't compare yourself to others, compare yourself to God's Word.
Lamech was the 7th generation for Adam and Lamech had already sunk to this level. But everyone struggles with the temptation to promote self, aka "pride."
James 1 says that we are tempted by our own desires (Romans 8:5-8).
We cannot follow God's Word on our own. However, Jesus makes it possible to wage war against our sinful desires, over our own flesh.
What do we do?
- Avoid the lure of self-promotion by pursuing humility. Do this and God will exalt you but in His own time (Proverbs 3). Everything we have and can do comes from God. get our eyes off ourselves and put it on the One who has saved us.
- Promote and proclaim Jesus.
