When Was Daniel Written?
Starting at 2:4 to the end of chapter 7, Daniel is written in Aramaic. Before and after this section Daniel is written in Hebrew.
Aramaic was the lingua franca used by nations when speaking to peoples of other languages, much like English today is used when communicating in international business.
So why is Daniel partially written in Aramaic? The explanation I prefer is that God knew that Daniel's prophecies in Daniel 2 and 7 were so specific that it would be impossible to refute their meaning. What would be done (and is commonly done today) was to claim that Daniel was written after the events occurred. They frequently claim Daniel was written in the 2nd century BC, some time after Alexander the Great. However, by this time period, the lingua franca was no longer Aramaic but Greek.
I believe that God had this written in Aramaic as a clue to when Daniel was really written, sometime in the 6th century BC. This would be prior to the events described.
