Nahum 1:1-11

Nahum 1:1-11 New Century Version (NCV)

This is the message for the city of Nineveh. This is the book of the vision of Nahum, who was from the town of Elkosh. The LORD is a jealous God who punishes; the LORD punishes and is filled with anger. The LORD punishes those who are against him, and he stays angry with his enemies. The LORD does not become angry quickly, and his power is great. The LORD will not let the guilty go unpunished. Where the LORD goes, there are whirlwinds and storms, and the clouds are the dust beneath his feet. He speaks to the sea and makes it dry; he dries up all the rivers. The areas of Bashan and Carmel dry up, and the flowers of Lebanon dry up. The mountains shake in front of him, and the hills melt. The earth trembles when he comes; the world and all who live in it shake with fear. No one can stay alive when he is angry; no one can survive his strong anger. His anger is poured out like fire; the rocks are smashed by him. The LORD is good, giving protection in times of trouble. He knows who trusts in him. But like a rushing flood, he will completely destroy Nineveh; he will chase his enemies until he kills them. The LORD will completely destroy anyone making plans against him. Trouble will not come a second time. Those people will be like tangled thorns or like people drunk from their wine; they will be burned up quickly like dry weeds. Someone has come from Nineveh who makes evil plans against the LORD and gives wicked advice.

Nahum 1:1-11 Amplified Bible (AMP)

The oracle (a burdensome message—a pronouncement from God) concerning Nineveh [the capital city of Assyria]. The book of the vision of Nahum of Elkosh [which he saw in spirit and prophesied]. ¶The LORD is a jealous and avenging God [protecting and demanding what is rightfully and uniquely His]; The LORD avenges and He is full of wrath. The LORD takes vengeance on His adversaries, And He reserves wrath for His enemies. [Ex 20:5] The LORD is slow to anger and great in power And He will by no means leave the guilty unpunished. The LORD has His way in the whirlwind and in the storm, And the clouds are the dust beneath His feet. [Ex 34:6, 7] He rebukes the sea and dries it up; He dries up all the rivers [illustrating His judgment]. Bashan [on the east] and [Mount] Carmel [on the west] wither, And [in the north] the blossoms of Lebanon fade. The mountains quake before Him And the hills melt away; Indeed the earth is shaken by His presence— Yes, the world and all that dwell in it. Who can stand before His indignation [His great wrath]? And who can stand up and endure the fierceness of His anger? His wrath is poured out like fire And the rocks are destroyed by Him. The LORD is good, A strength and stronghold in the day of trouble; He knows [He recognizes, cares for, and understands fully] those who take refuge and trust in Him. [Ps 1:6; Hos 13:5; John 10:14, 27] But with an overwhelming flood [of judgment through invading armies] He will make a complete destruction of its site And will pursue His enemies into darkness. ¶Whatever [plot] you [Assyrians] devise against the LORD, He will make a complete end of it; Affliction [of God’s people by the hand of Assyria] will not occur twice. Like tangled thorn branches [gathered for fuel], And like those drowned in drunkenness, The people of Nineveh are consumed [through fire] Like stubble completely withered and dry [in the day of the LORD’S wrath]. [Mal 4:1] From you [O Nineveh], One has gone forth who plotted evil against the LORD, A malevolent counselor [the king of Assyria]. [2 Kin 19:20-23; Is 10:5-7; 36:15-20]

Nahum 1:1-11 The Passion Translation (TPT)

This is the book of the vision of Nahum who was from the village of Elkosh. A prophecy concerning Nineveh: YAHWEH is a God who tolerates no rivals. Lord YAHWEH will take vengeance on his foes. He punishes his adversaries and keeps wrath for his enemies. YAHWEH is very slow to anger but so great in power; YAHWEH will not let the guilty go unpunished. He marches out in the whirlwind and storm, and the clouds are the dust of his feet. He rebukes the sea and dries it up and makes all the rivers run dry. At his rebuke, the lush meadows of Bashan and Carmel wither; the flowering fields of Lebanon fade. In his presence, the mountains quake and the hills melt away. When he appears, the earth heaves, and the world and all who dwell in it are laid waste. Who can stand before an angry God? Who can face his fiery fury? When his wrath erupts, it pours out like lava, and boulders are broken to bits as he approaches. The goodness of YAHWEH is beyond belief! For when trouble comes, we run into his heart and hide. He always cares for those who seek refuge in him. But with an overwhelming flood, he will make a complete end of Nineveh, and darkness will overtake his enemies. Whatever evil plot you hatch against YAHWEH, he will so completely thwart that it will not rise up a second time. They will be like drunkards from their carousing— like entangled thorns, they will be consumed as dry stubble. From you, Nineveh, came one who plotted evil against YAHWEH, a wicked, worthless strategist.
