Faith With Feet "Don't Let Your Tongue Lick You"
In Verse 2 it states "for we all stumble in many ways. If anyone does not stumble in what he says, he is a perfect man, able to bridle the whole body as well."
The tongue is small but has the biggest impact of your life. The tongue is the major part of my walk, if you don't have control of the thing that I say then I can't control my body. James says that little things are insignificant but have such a big impact. In Verse 5, James says that the tongue also do great things and have great influence.
At the end of Verse 5, James points out the negative of the tongue describing it has a fire and how it could ruin a forest if it could. The tongue is small but it is a small fire that can have a big impact on your life. Whoever said "stick and stones may break my bones, but words will never hurt me" was deaf. Words do hurt, they can be devastating. Put downs, disrespect, dishonor are all harmful in some way.
A fire that is under control can bring delight, but a fire that is not is devastating.
In the middle of Verse 6, it say "the tongue is set among our members as that which defiles the entire body, and sets on fire the course of our life." Meaning that the tongue is the iniquity. The tongue is a world of iniquity it is the thing that can contaminate our body. The tongue can defile a whole man. With the slander, profanity, and lies.
(Example: when you gossip you defile your whole body.)
The tongue is able to commit sin, anytime. For at the end of Verse 6 it says that it set on fire by hell. The spark that ignites your tongue comes from hell. There is a gas line that comes directly from hell to your tongue. An out of control tongue comes directly from Satan. Man can tame any animal but not his tongue, because it says at the end of verse 8 that it is a restless evil and full of deadly poison.
In verses 9-10, it explains that we bless our Lord with our tongue but curse out people and deceive with it. Out the same mouth comes blessing and cursing when it shouldn't be this way.
How do you get control over my tongue? No MAN can control the tongue, but God can. Your tongue is connected to your heart. And when God gets a hold of your heart, he will control your tongue.
