CJ Mahaney The Church + Disappointment
High expectations clashing with reality results in disappointment. Unrealistic ecpectations will always lead to disappointment. There will always be a collision with the two. Conference life bears little to no resemblance to actual churches.
WHAT SHOULD WE DO ABOUT THIS CLASH?
Philippians 2:12-16 ESV
"Therefore, my beloved, as you have always obeyed, so now, not only as in my presence but much more in my absence, work out your own salvation with fear and trembling, for it is God who works in you, both to will and to work for his good pleasure. Do all things without grumbling or questioning, that you may be blameless and innocent, children of God without blemish in the midst of a crooked and twisted generation, among whom you shine as lights in the world, holding fast to the word of life, so that in the day of Christ I may be proud that I did not run in vain or labor in vain."
1) Rremember ghe sovereign activity of God. Verse 13 states GOD IS AT WORK WITHIN ME. Also God is at work within my own gospel centered church. Are we more aware of grace or deficiencies in our church. Paul was able to find evidences of grace in the Corinthian church so we should be abke to find even more graces in our own church. It takes discernment to identify how God is at work and this is much harder. Familiarize with Romans 12, Galatians 5, 1 Corinthians 12. Am I able to make a list of what's good with my church quicker than a list of what's wrong? God is most aware of the countless ways he is at work within our churches. Do I tenderly cherish the smallest measures of grace?
2) Avoid temptation to complain (V. 14)
Grumbling and complaining creates disunity. When we complain we must remember IT'S NOT ABOUT YOU STUPID. The church is about God, Christ, and loving other people. Those who are apt to grumble are recruiters of grumblers. CHRONIC GRUMBLERS ARE NORMALLY RECRUITERS. Instead of grumbling we should strive to find evidences of grace.
3) Hold fast to the word of life
Only the gospel can fullt address our disappointments. We have to deal with the fact that disappointment will come. Life will come with disappointments but these areas of life were not created to give us full satisfaction. The gospel is created to give us full satisfaction. Our grip on the gospel in this fallen world will continue to weaken UNLESS we hold fast to the gospel. We hold this fast to ourselves by preaching to iurselves daily. We are to be a PROclaimsing church not a COMplsining church. As christians we should recognize that we are doing so much better than we should be doing. UNLESS WE HOLD THE GOSPEL FAST WE WILL BECOME CHRONIC COMPLAINERS.
Philippians 1:27 ESV
"Only let your manner of life be worthy of the gospel of Christ, so that whether I come and see you or am absent, I may hear of you that you are standing firm in one spirit, with one mind striving side by side for the faith of the gospel,"
What we are truly passionate in is what we truly hold fast to.
