Kevin DeYoung: The Church + Holiness
The nicene creed states that we believe in one holy church.
We have all been given the divine gift of a conscience to grow in holiness. The histroy of the entire world because this christian monk refused to do what he felt was wrong according to the word of God.
2 Corinthians 1:12 ESV
"For our boast is this, the testimony of our conscience, that we behaved in the world with simplicity and godly sincerity, not by earthly wisdom but by the grace of God, and supremely so toward you."
When Paul boasts this means something of utmost importance. Paul does not over apologize to get them off his back. Conscience is not a final judge byt rather a clear commendation.
Conscience is the faculty in humans to determine what is right and wrong.
Romans 2:14-15 ESV
"For when Gentiles, who do not have the law, by nature do what the law requires, they are a law to themselves, even though they do not have the law. They show that the work of the law is written on their hearts, while their conscience also bears witness, and their conflicting thoughts accuse or even excuse them"
WE ALL HAVE AN INBORN CONSCIENCE. We all have a sense of morality but it is stained by sin.
Conscience prosecutes and defends us. Prosecutor makes us feel bad when we sin.
Conscience is what separates us from animals. "Eventually lies become as plain as the nose on your face."
WAYS CONSCIENCE CAN GO BAD
1) You can have an evil conscience
One that accuses you of wrong but you don't do anything about it.
The more you ignore your guilty conscience the more at danger you are.
2) Seared/scarred conscience
Our conscience cannot feel the pain of sin anymore. Frostbite example becoming increasingly insensitive but little do we realize we are at danger if loosing a limb.
3) Defile conscience
Titus 1:15 ESV
"To the pure, all things are pure, but to the defiled and unbelieving, nothing is pure; but both their minds and their consciences are defiled."
Conscience tells us I dont feel any remorse about sinning but raher embraces and rejoices it. They know that it is wrong but are apathetic towards their conscience.
4) Weak conscience
1 Corinthians 8:7-13 ESV
"However, not all possess this knowledge. But some, through former association with idols, eat food as really offered to an idol, and their conscience, being weak, is defiled. Food will not commend us to God. We are no worse off if we do not eat, and no better off if we do. But take care that this right of yours does not somehow become a stumbling block to the weak. For if anyone sees you who have knowledge eating in an idol's temple, will he not be encouraged, if his conscience is weak, to eat food offered to idols? And so by your knowledge this weak person is destroyed, the brother for whom Christ died. Thus, sinning against your brothers and wounding their conscience when it is weak, you sin against Christ. Therefore, if food makes my brother stumble, I will never eat meat, lest I make my brother stumble."
A weak conscience accuses you if things that are not inherently wrong. A stumbling block, to the person of a weak conscience, when pushed will be trained to ignore their conscience. This shall lead them to destruction. IT IS A DANGEROUS THING TO PUSH PEOPLE PAST THEIR CONSCIENCE. The person of a weak conscience is constantly being convicted of things that are not necessarily sinful
1 Peter 3:16
1) TURN FROM SIN WHEN YOUR CONSCIENCE TELLS YOU WHAT YOU ARE ABOUT TO DO OR ARE IN THE MIDDLE OF DOING IS WRONG
"Can I after watching this feel like I can thank God?"
Whatever violates your conscience is wrong.
2) TURN TO CHRIST WHEN YOUR CONSCIENCE TELLS YOU WHAT YOU DID WAS WRONG
There is a danger to be too hard on ourself. Always finding ways we are failure. There is also the danger to be to soft on ourselves and we ignore the power of sin. THE SIN IS BAD BUT CHRIST IS BETTER.
THE REGULAR STATE OF A CHRISTIAN SHOULD BE OF A CLEAR CONSCIENCE.
1 Corinthians 4:4 ESV
"For I am not aware of anything against myself, but I am not thereby acquitted. It is the Lord who judges me."
Paul has learned to pursue with utmost importance a clear conscience.
Conscience is either our greatest enemy or greatest friend.
Our sin stinks and should be paid for and it has been!!!!!!!!!
