Jeff Purswell:The church and the purpose of God
Google earth takes what is familiar and expands, broadens, and shows we are part of something massive.
What is Gods perrspective on our church?
Gods eternal purpose is to dwell among a people he has made his own. Our church is more important than we realize.
1) A garden
2) A dwelling Exodus 25:1-8; 33:12-16
God dwells among the people within a tent. Within the tent people are restricted from being too close to God for his glory would destry them. The very place that God had chose to dwell in he allowed to be destroyed.
3) A person John 1:1-4; 14, 15, 18
God dwelled with man in the most intimate and personal way. He came to reconcile us to God. This is the most authentic and personal dwelling God made wwith his people. In church we arw joinging angels and saints in wotshipping God.
4) A people 1 Corinthians 3:16-17; 2 Corinthians 6:16
God now dwells within his own people
THE CHURCH IS THE PARTICULAR PLACE THAT GOD HAS CHOSEN AS HIS DWELLING PLACE. Holiness is the standard because this where God has chosen to dwell.
5) A city
Revelation 21:1-4, 9-12, 15-16, 19, 21-23 ESV
Then I saw a new heaven and a new earth, for the first heaven and the first earth had passed away, and the sea was no more. And I saw the holy city, new Jerusalem, coming down out of heaven from God, prepared as a bride adorned for her husband. And I heard a loud voice from the throne saying, "Behold, the dwelling place of God is with man. He will dwell with them, and they will be his people, and God himself will be with them as their God. He will wipe away every tear from their eyes, and death shall be no more, neither shall there be mourning, nor crying, nor pain anymore, for the former things have passed away." Then came one of the seven angels who had the seven bowls full of the seven last plagues and spoke to me, saying, "Come, I will show you the Bride, the wife of the Lamb." And he carried me away in the Spirit to a great, high mountain, and showed me the holy city Jerusalem coming down out of heaven from God, having the glory of God, its radiance like a most rare jewel, like a jasper, clear as crystal. It had a great, high wall, with twelve gates, and at the gates twelve angels, and on the gates the names of the twelve tribes of the sons of Israel were inscribed— And the one who spoke with me had a measuring rod of gold to measure the city and its gates and walls. The city lies foursquare, its length the same as its width. And he measured the city with his rod, 12,000 stadia. Its length and width and height are equal. The foundations of the wall of the city were adorned with every kind of jewel. The first was jasper, the second sapphire, the third agate, the fourth emerald, And the twelve gates were twelve pearls, each of the gates made of a single pearl, and the street of the city was pure gold, transparent as glass. And I saw no temple in the city, for its temple is the Lord God the Almighty and the Lamb. And the city has no need of sun or moon to shine on it, for the glory of God gives it light, and its lamp is the Lamb.
The entire city shall be the dwelling place of God. In this new city there are no restrictions. There is no longer a need for an altar for the sacrifice has already been made. Mankind returns back to the fellowship enjoyed in the garden. FOR THE CHURCH OF GOD REDEEMED BY CHRIST THIS IS A REALITY NOW THAT GOD HAS DEMOLISHED THE IMPENETRABLE BARRIER BETWEEN US AND HIM AND DWELLS WITHIN US AND MAKES HIIS PRESENCE KNOWN. If you treasure God you will treasure his church. Longing for heaven is equivalent of longing for the church.
