Mark 6:14-29; Joe Lechner; THE DAY IS HERE
King Herod heard of gospel expanding. Occurs between disciples being sent out and returning in verse 30. Johns death meant to foreshadow Christ's death. Anyone who follows Christ must be willing to suffer. Whoever must follow Jesus must reckon with death of John. There is a cost to being a disciple but it is MORE costly not to be a disciple. Herod is a perfect example of what one who does not follow Jesus is like. Focus of story is primarily on Herod. Looking at Herod and all his cast of supporting characters one notices all their faults.
Even Herod knew of Jesus. Jesus mission had become national news. As his name spread so did opinions about him. Herod feared John was back in Jesus body to haunt him. John had confronted Herod personally about his sin. He challenged Herod to repent. Herodias divorced her husband to marry Herod, so did Herod divorce his wife. Herodias was actually his niece!!! John not only told Herod he was sinning but that he need to repent & rely on God
CONFLICT (19 & 20)
Instead of repenting Herodias wanted John dead. Herod however had a strange fascination toward John. He feared John as a righteous & holy man. Things John spoke resonated with Herod. Herod had a strange fascination with the authroitative teaching of John, but when it became personal for Herod he suppressed any feelings of conviction he had. There was an internal conflict within Herod. He had his political role as King and yet was afraid of what John preached to him. To solve this conflict he threw him in prison. IF YOU DON'T TURN FROM YOUR SIN IT WILL TURN ON YOU.
What begins as a party is seized by Herodias to take advantage of Herod to kill John. Most of these parties were filled with lust. Herodias sent in her daughter to dance in a way that would please Herod. By making his promise he was boasting in his power. Herod was trapped and all parties knew that. Herod rather feared losing John but the desire of pride was too great. He also knew he would not feel as conflicted if John was dead. To protect his sin he killed John, giving sin the power to tighten its deathgrip on his soul. John died physically but Herod died spiritually. Next time Herod is seen in gospel all conviction and fear in him has been expelled. He was not sorry anymore. Jesus became a joke to him. He rejects God's son. He was attacked by Nabiteans and then exiled by Caligula in which he would die. After Johns execution he became completely spiritually dead. This was his spiritual decision point and he answered wrong. What is more costly? To lose your head or your soul? To repent or not to repent? Unless we silence sin, sin shall silence our conscience. UNLESS WE HEED GOD'S WORD THE DAY WILL COME WHEN WE DESPISE GOD'S SON AND GOD WILL HAVE NOTHING MORE TO SAY TO US. One wonders if Herod thought maybe I will repent later. The truth is there will come a time when we can either continue following sin or start following Christ. If Herod could have seen how grateful he was would he have reacted differently. He was happy to hear of God's word but not when it got personal. Call to discipleship is a call to believe, follow, & repent. This call has it's cost but is nothing compared to cost sin will have on our lives ultimately. Repentance is hard but it is the door to life.
Confess sins to God
Confess we need his power, spirit, forgiveness, and him
Desire for righteousness and pursuing holiness
CALL SIN AS SIN
Sin is sin don't let it seem sugar-coated. Confront it as it is in scripture.
Christ died for my sin and in him there is forgiveness.
PURPOSE TO STOP
go to gods word & find verses dealing with what fighting, learn them, memorize them, and pray them. The word of God MUST be hidden in our hearts. We must also find what causes these temptations
REPLACE SINS WITH RIGHTEOUSNESS
Sin always comes bundled with lies. Ask oursleves what is the righteous opposite of this sin.
SEEK FELLOWSHIP & ACCOUNTABILITY
This is not a battle we can win by oursleves.
REPEAT THESE STEPS
Repentance is a daily lifestyle. It is not one & done. It may feel costly but it is more costly not to.
