Philippians 1:12-18; Mickey Connolly
Paul's highest adoration is to see the gospel spread.
Philippians 1:12-18 ESV
I want you to know, brothers, that what has happened to me has really served to advance the gospel, so that it has become known throughout the whole imperial guard and to all the rest that my imprisonment is for Christ. And most of the brothers, having become confident in the Lord by my imprisonment, are much more bold to speak the word without fear. Some indeed preach Christ from envy and rivalry, but others from good will. The latter do it out of love, knowing that I am put here for the defense of the gospel. The former proclaim Christ out of selfish ambition, not sincerely but thinking to afflict me in my imprisonment. What then? Only that in every way, whether in pretense or in truth, Christ is proclaimed, and in that I rejoice. Yes, and I will rejoice,
1) A setback is really an advance. Something was misunderstood. During Paul's imprisonment, be did not complain, or fall prey to self pity. His imprisonment advanced the gospel, because of his sufferings. Paul was chained to the emperor's best men. Paul's message was considered treason.
Paul's imprisonment created believers in Caesars household
2) MOST OF THE CHRISTIANS IN ROME WERE MORE CONFIDENT IN PROCLAIMING THE GOSPEL
They became MUCH MORE bold.
"Preaching a Christ-centered word always includes courage."
Their boldness came from a love for Paul.
It is not only the greats that inspire others, but those who speak life into others via community.
HOW CAN I INSPIRE OTHERS???
3) EVEN ILL-MOTIVATED RIVALS CAUSE PAUL TO REJOICE
Christ can still be proclaimed, even in pretense & bad motives.
"This is an example of true Christian living."
He has set a great example.
His highest aspiration was to see the gospel advanced.
HOW WILL EVERYTHING I DO IN LIFE HINDER OR ADVANCE THE GOSPEL?
Are there any aspirations in my life that hinder the gospel?
HIS DEEPEST TRUST WAS IN GOD'S SOVEREIGN PURPOSES, AND IT'S SHOULD BE AS WELL
Paul sees life through the divine perspective.
Paul believed he was put there by God himself.
WHERE HAS GOD PUT ME FOR THE ADVANCE OF THE GOSPEL?
HOW DO WE REACT WHEN OUR AGENDA SUDDENLY CHANGES BY GOD?
