Philippians 1:1-2: Mickey Connolly
Paul wants to break new ground but his plans are consistently stalemated by the Holy Spirit. Paul goes to Macedonia to go to Philipi. Philipi was a large urban cosmopolitan city. The events highlighted in Acts 16
1) Lydia converted
2) Slave girl with demon follows Paul. Paul gets fed up and drives out demon, that made her owners money. Paul and Atlas are thrown in jail. Earthquake, and then jailer is saved
3) Paul arrested in Jerusalem and appeals to Caesar. Epaphroditus is sent to comfort Paul.
Philippians is the most personal letter.
There was legalism in Philipi. There was worldliness in Philipi.
Over arching theme & person is Jesus Christ. Knowing him is surpassing worth, and madness with living, AND DEATH WORTH DYING.
Philippians 1:1-2 ESV
Paul and Timothy, servants of Christ Jesus, To all the saints in Christ Jesus who are at Philippi, with the overseers and deacons: Grace to you and peace from God our Father and the Lord Jesus Christ.
Paul normally emphasizes himself as an apostle, but emphasizes himself as a servant, because of his relationship with the Philippian church. By servant he refers to himself as slave, but to whom???
To the Greeks and Romans slaves were incredibly dejected. The lowest of the low, in society. They are claiming to be slave of a crucified criminal. Slaves of a slave. HOW MUCH LOWER COULD ONE POSSIBLY BE. To Paul this was worthy of great honor. Slavery to Jesus, brought true freedom and joy. To redeem is to buy a slave. We went from shaved off death to slaves of the life-giving Christ.
AM I A SERVANT OR SLAVE???
We are not to serve Christ at our convenience, but completely & utterly devotedly.
"To all the saints in Christ"
Saints mean all of God's people. Called apart by God and for God.
HOW DO SINNERS MERIT THIS TITLE???
We have Sainthood only in Christ. We are Saints by union in Christ. We receive the benefits of his resurrection.
BE BECOMING THAT [WHICH IS CHRIST]
Why did Paul pray for grace and peace in all the epistles. This is the essence of the gospel. Grace is an expression of God's love to us. All we have is the result of grace from Jesus.
Peace is the prime effect of the gospel. We have peace with God, due to our reconciliation. We have been made whole. He makes broken people whole.
Subjectively, grace and peace are our inheritance because of Christ's work.
