Jesus says elsewhere that whoever desires to save his life shall lose it. In this context, it seems to have a very particular meaning in that judgment is about to fall so you have to get out! Lot and Noah had to get out and leave everything behind. Lot's wife turned back and got included in the judgment. So you must get out immediately and not turn back lest you be destroyed.
Can this be applied to Jesus' other related statements? Taking up our cross daily and following him--is that how we keep going, escaping from the pending judgement? Renouncing all we have--is that leaving everything behind and following him into salvation?
