The Certainty of God's Promise (Hebrews 6:13-20)
13 For when God made a promise to Abraham, since he had no one greater by whom to swear, he swore by himself, 14 saying, "Surely I will bless you and multiply you." 15 And thus Abraham, having patiently waited, obtained the promise. 16 For people swear by something greater than themselves, and in all their disputes an oath is final for confirmation. 17 So when God desired to show more convincingly to the heirs of the promise the unchangeable character of his purpose, he guaranteed it with an oath, 18 so that by two unchangeable things, in which it is impossible for God to lie, we who have fled for refuge might have strong encouragement to hold fast to the hope set before us. 19 We have this as a sure and steadfast anchor of the soul, a hope that enters into the inner place behind the curtain, 20 where Jesus has gone as a forerunner on our behalf, having become a high priest forever after the order of Melchizedek.
Christ the Hope of Jews and Gentiles
Romans 5:8 – For I tell you that Christ became a servant to the circumcised to show God's truthfulness, in order to confirm the promises given to the patriarchs,
Jesus, the Messiah, came to the Jews to show God’s truth or truthfulness to the patriarchs. He came to confirm the promise given to the patriarchs. Jesus brought about completeness to the promises of the Old Testament. Because of the finishing of the Old Testament or completing of it, He was able to then begin a New Covenant based upon better promises in Him. This is the same truth or truthfulness spoken of in the Old Testament. God is showing us His reliability if we will put our hope and faith in Him.
The Patriarchs
Genesis 24:49 – Abraham’s servant speaks to Rebekah’s parents concerning her coming with him to become Isaac’s wife. He asks them to show Checed in truth. When you show Checed, it is not based upon feeling it is based upon covenant. Your feelings don’t come into play, you may feel great, or you may not feel so great. But when you act on Checed you will reap God’s reward or promise.
Genesis 32:10 – Jacob is grateful for the Checed and truth God has shown him. He crossed over the Jordan with only his staff and now he has become two companies.
Genesis 47:29 – When Israel is dying he calls for Joseph and asks him to show him Checed and deal truly with him by not burying him in Egypt.

We see it’s fulfillment in Jesus.

Jesus is the truth, and through Him we have access to Checed in the heavens.
Mercy (Checed) is New Testament equivalent of Grace
Psalm 118:1-4 - 1 1Oh give thanks to the LORD, for he is good; for his steadfast love (Checed) endures forever! 2 2Let Israel say, "His steadfast love (Checed) endures forever." 3 3Let the house of Aaron say, "His steadfast love (Checed) endures forever." 4 4Let those who fear the LORD say, "His steadfast love (Checed) endures forever." Foot note 118:1 Mercy (Hebrew Chesed) is often translated “steadfast love,” “unfailing love,” or “lovingkindness” and is equivalent to the NT “grace”. There it is grace and truth came through Jesus Christ. It is the same Checed as used in the OT. Jesus is the fulfillment of Checed.
John 1:14-18 - 14 And the Word became flesh and dwelt among us, and we have seen his glory, glory as of the only Son from the Father, full of grace and truth. 15 (John bore witness about him, and cried out, "This was he of whom I said, 'He who comes after me ranks before me, because he was before me.'") 16 And from his fullness we have all received, grace upon grace. 17 For the law was given through Moses; grace and truth came through Jesus Christ. 18 No one has ever seen God; the only God, who is at the Father's side, he has made him known.
So all the things that Grace and Truth do in the Word of God, now comes to us through Jesus Christ!
