Intro: Fear
A. Unless you’ve been sleeping under a rock, you know that there’s a lot of unrest all around us today.
B. What should we do, not worry about it or prepare for the end of world?
C. I just try to speak into it from a Faith-Perspective.
D. As followers of Jesus, the filter that forms our decisions is different.
E. Scripture says we are not of this world, not to be conformed to this world & don’t live like those who have no hope!
1. We live by faith, not fear
A. John 14:1, 26-27 – “Don’t let your hearts be troubled. Trust in God, and trust also in me. 26 But when the Father sends the Advocate as my representative—that is, the Holy Spirit—he will teach you everything and will remind you of everything I have told you. 27 “I am leaving you with a gift—peace of mind and heart. And the peace I give is a gift the world cannot give. So don’t be troubled or afraid.
B. Peace that goes beyond human understanding…
C. God’s not sitting in heaven thinking “I didn’t see this coming.”
D. Our God is faithful and in control!
E. 2 Timothy 1:7 – For God has not given us a spirit of fear and timidity, but of power, love, and self-discipline.
F. We are not panicking, we have peace
G. We are not fearful, we have faith!
2. We are sacrificial, not selfish
A. Philippians 2:3-4 – Don’t be selfish; don’t try to impress others. Be humble, thinking of others as better than yourselves. 4 Don’t look out only for your own interests, but take an interest in others, too.
B. As the “church” we will put others ahead of ourselves!
C. Acts 2:44-46 – And all the believers met together in one place and shared everything they had. 45 They sold their property and possessions and shared the money with those in need. 46 They worshiped together at the Temple each day, met in homes for the Lord’s Supper, and shared their meals with great joy and generosity
D. We know that church isn’t a building, it’s people
E. Pray together as a family, encourage someone, call someone
F. We are a spiritual refuge for people in need.
G. Hundreds of thousands of people are looking for hope!
H. God can & will use this time for good, to turn people to Jesus!
3. We shine the light; we do not hide it.
A. Matthew 5:14-16 – “You are the light of the world—like a city on a hilltop that cannot be hidden. 15 No one lights a lamp and then puts it under a basket. Instead, a lamp is placed on a stand, where it gives light to everyone in the house. 16 In the same way, let your good deeds shine out for all to see, so that everyone will praise your heavenly Father.
B. During this time, people are afraid… unsettled… anxious…
C. We are Hope Dealers—Light shiners—Love givers!
D. This virus is highly contagious, but I’m praying for believers, to be even more contagious.
E. We don’t have to panic like those who have no hope
F. Romans 1 says – I am not ashamed of this Good News about Christ. It is the power of God at work, saving everyone who believes
G. It’s His kindness that leads us to repentance & We receive forgiveness even when we don’t deserve it
H. Philippians 4 says – Don’t fret or worry. Instead of worrying, pray. Letting God know your concerns. Before you know it, a sense of God’s wholeness, everything coming together for good, will come and settle you down. It’s wonderful what happens when Christ displaces worry at the center of your life.
I. 2 Corinthians 4:8-9 – We often suffer, but we are never crushed. Even when we don’t know what to do, we never give up. 9 In times of trouble, God is with us, and when we are knocked down, we get up again.
