What we do with our money is the most tangible/measurable indicator of where we place our faith and fear.
1) TITHING is a two-way TEST
Mal 3:10 Bring the full tithe into the storehouse, that there may be food in my house. And thereby put me to the test,
The word tithe means a “tenth part.”
God says test me… return the tithe (the holy part I’ve reserved for myself) back to me and watch what I will do. (Prove me) Tithing is the only area where God says we can test Him.
If we tithe, we are under blessing.
Prove me… see if this is not true
The windows of heaven open
God’s Blessing is poured out
There is no lack
God rebukes the devourer
I reap abundance from what I sow
The vine brings life
I’m called blessed by others
Non Believers See You as A Blessing
If we don’t tithe, God says…we are under a curse.
Consequence is a curse
The windows of heaven shut
God’s Blessing is withheld
There is lack
The devourer destroys
I reap poorly from what I sow
The vine drys up
I’m called cursed by others
Non Believers See You as A Burden
2) Tithing is a Timeless TRUTH
vs 8 Will man rob God? Yet you are robbing me. But you say, 'How have we robbed you?' In your tithes and contributions.
Tithing predates the Law / First mentioned (500 years before the law)
Gen 14:18 And Melchizedek king of Salem brought out bread and wine. (He was priest of God Most High.) 19 And he blessed him and said,
“Blessed be Abram by God Most High,
Possessor of heaven and earth;
20 and blessed be God Most High,
who has delivered your enemies into your hand!”
And Abram gave him a tenth of everything.
Hebrews affirms this and provides the superior spiritual parallel
(Heb 7:4–8) See how great this man was to whom Abraham the patriarch gave a tenth of the spoils! 5 And those descendants of Levi who receive the priestly office have a commandment in the law to take tithes from the people, that is, from their brothers, though these also are descended from Abraham. 6 But this man who does not have his descent from them received tithes from Abraham and blessed him who had the promises. 7 It is beyond dispute that the inferior is blessed by the superior. 8 In the one case tithes are received by mortal men, but in the other case, by one of whom it is testified that he lives.
Second time the tithe is mentioned, gives the origin of the tithe in the law
(Ge 28:20–22) Then Jacob made a vow, saying, “If God will be with me and will keep me in this way that I go, and will give me bread to eat and clothing to wear, 21 so that I come again to my father’s house in peace, then the Lord shall be my God, 22 and this stone, which I have set up for a pillar, shall be God’s house. And of all that you give me I will give a full tenth to you.”
When Did Jacob pay that vow?
(Dt 26:1–4) “When you come into the land that the Lord your God is giving you for an inheritance and have taken possession of it and live in it, 2 you shall take some of the first of all the fruit of the ground, which you harvest from your land that the Lord your God is giving you, and you shall put it in a basket, and you shall go to the place that the Lord your God will choose, to make his name to dwell there.
…12 “When you have finished paying all the tithe …13 then you shall say before the Lord your God, ‘I have removed the sacred portion out of my house, and moreover, I have given it to the Levite, the sojourner, the fatherless, and the widow, according to all your commandment that you have commanded me. I have not transgressed any of your commandments, nor have I forgotten them. 14 I have not eaten of the tithe while I was mourning, or removed any of it while I was unclean, or offered any of it to the dead. I have obeyed the voice of the Lord my God. I have done according to all that you have commanded me. 15 Look down from your holy habitation, from heaven, and bless your people Israel and the ground that you have given us, as you swore to our fathers, a land flowing with milk and honey.’
Jacob vowed the tithe. Moses enshrined it into the law, and the Lord considers the tithe His and Holy
(Le 27:30) “Every tithe of the land, whether of the seed of the land or of the fruit of the trees, is the Lord’s; it is holy to the Lord.
Jesus affirmed the tithe
(Mt 23:23) “Woe to you, scribes and Pharisees, hypocrites! For you tithe mint and dill and cumin, and have neglected the weightier matters of the law: justice and mercy and faithfulness. These you ought to have done, without neglecting the others.
3) Tithing is total TRUST
vs 10 Bring the full tithe into the storehouse, that there may be food in my house.
When we tithe we are trusting God… that I can better steward the 90% after I tithe than I can with 100% if I choose to keep what is His.
I don’t trust the blessing, I trust the blesser!
Tithing is God’s trust in you, to care for his house…The believer’s tithe helps support the work of the church, the priest, and the ministry to people.
The place where we receive our “spiritual food” is the place where we are to pay our tithes.
Could it be that tithing is more personal to Jesus than you and I realize?
