BELIEVE - wk1 (John 1:1-18)

We are taking an extended dive into the gospel of John. In this gospel we witness the hands-on Jesus in all his splendor and radiance. John writes as one who is very close to Jesus and he goes to great length to record a full picture of the person and powerful work of Jesus: a human Christ to redeem us, a divine Christ to reveal God’s nature, and a powerful, Spirit-filled Christ to help us live godly lives. We want to lean into this incredible portrait of Christ painted in the gospel of John! We want to grow to know Jesus better, grow in the life He gives and grow in the life-mission He invites us into. John writes so that we would BELIEVE. *(see John 20:30-31)

Each of the Gospel writers chose a different starting point for their accounts of the life of Jesus.
=Matthew began with Abraham, showing how Jesus came from Abraham’s family and was the fulfillment of God’s promise to Abraham.
=Mark skipped most of the preliminaries and moved right to the action, beginning with the ministry of John the Baptist.
=Luke began with a review of his research method and rooted Jesus’ life in the wider historical events of his time.
==John presented the largest perspective of all, describing Jesus as the very source of everything we understand as beginning. The Apostle John wrote his Gospel to help his readers understand the identity and DEITY of Jesus.

John 20:30-31

John 1:1 - 'in the beginning' (
One theologian states: “God’s Word in the Old Testament is his creative utterance, his power in action fulfilling his purpose.”

In Genesis 1:1 we read how God SAID, “Let there be...and there was...” (1:3). =The Word of God is God at work.

In John 1:1-18 we learn seven truths about the Word.
1. The Word Is Eternal (1:1a)
2. The Word Is Personality (1:1b)
3. The Word Is Deity (1:1c)
4. The Word Is Creating (1:3)
5. The Word Is Animating (1:4a)
6. The Word Is Revealing (1:4b)
7. The Word Is Incarnate (1:14a)
John is one of the closest to Jesus throughout his ministry and a disciple that wrote much of the NT; wrote about who Jesus is and what He has to say until his dying day. He never recanted, renounced or turned away from the truth of WHO Jesus is!

John 1:1-18

VERSE 3: HE IS CREATOR
"God created everything through him, and nothing was created except through him."

The New Testament portrays the Son of God as the agent of creation, for all things were created through him (see 1 Corinthians 8:6; Colossians 1:16; Hebrews 1:2). Everything came into being through Christ and ultimately depends upon him.

The Apostle Paul would write in agreement with John as he wrote:

Colossians 1:14-16
The Son is the image of the invisible God, the firstborn over all creation. For in him all things were created: things in heaven and on earth, visible and invisible, whether thrones or powers or rulers or authorities; all things have been created through him and for him. He is before all things, and in him all things hold together.
VERSE 9: He is the LIGHT

John 1:9-11
"The true light that gives light to everyone was coming into the world. He was in the world, and though the world was made through him, the world did not recognize him. He came to that which was his own, but his own did not receive him."

Jesus is the “true” light. His light is available for EVERYONE. Yet many reject him or miss him…

Q) How can we miss something so obvious, so wonderful, right in front of us?

VERSE 12: FAMILY OF GOD
"12 But to all who believed him and accepted him, he gave the right to become children of God."

Those who do receive him, are received by Him, now enfolded & adopted into His heavenly family forevermore. We are now sons and daughters of God!
VERSE 18: HE IS REVEALER OF GOD

"18 No one has ever seen God. But the unique One, who is himself God, is near to the Father’s heart. He has revealed God to us."

Has made him known. The Greek reads, “He has explained [him].”

The Son is God’s explainer; he came to earth and lived among men to explain God to us—with his words and by his person. No one can know God apart from Christ, = God’s explainer.
