Last week we looked at part 1 of this message, God’s Mandate for North Anderson Baptist Church. Today we are going to cover the second part of the mandate which is The Great Commission found in Matthew 28:18-20.
I have added the 18th verse to give proper context to the message. Jesus was given all authority in heaven and earth by God Himself and therefore He had the right to give this commission to all His disciples then and those who would follow as a result of their sharing the Gospel and to all of us who have become Christians since the time of the disciples. This is our Great Commission as it was theirs.

If you remember last week, I mentioned that these are the two mandates of God’s, to love the Lord God with all your heart and all your soul and all your mind and all your strength and to love your neighbor as yourself and this one, which we have just read. Last week we spoke of the first one and today we will discuss the second one.
What is a “commission?” The Merriam-Webster’s Dictionary gives us a great understanding of this word. A commission is, "a formal written warrant granting the power to perform various acts or duties or an authorization or command to act in a prescribed manner or to perform prescribed acts or authority to act for, in behalf of, or in place of another or a task or matter entrusted to one as an agent for another or a group of persons directed to perform some duty or an act of entrusting or giving authority.” There were other definitions but these are the ones that apply to this word for us today.

Jesus did say this “Great Commission” but Matthew recorded it, so it was a written warrant giving power to perform certain acts or duties. Jesus did give this statement, with all the authority of God behind it, saying that this was to be done just like He prescribed and that those who acted in completing this commission were doing it on behalf of Jesus, since He was leaving them physically and going back to the Father. Jesus did entrust this commission to those He loved and believed that they would actually work to complete it. We who follow Jesus have been given the authority to go, to baptize, make disciples and to teach. This is the commission of Christ to His followers and we are to do this with all our hearts under the mandate of loving God first and then loving our neighbor enough to share this Gospel.

NABC has been about the business of Jesus, sharing His Gospel to all people. From the early times we shared the Gospel here in Anderson and the surrounding area, and we have been sending people out to share further away. We have gone to or sent others to: Ohio, Oklahoma, Massachusetts, Maryland, Pennsylvania, New York, Florida, West Virginia, Kentucky and within South Carolina. These are the places that I can recall here in the USA. But we have also sent people to: Haiti, Cuba, Africa, Brazil, Venezuela, Sierra Leone, and Guatemala. The commission of Christ includes going to the ends of the earth as is referred to in Acts 1:8,
Therefore our mandate is not just here in Anderson, or the state of South Carolina but the nation and then all the world. You and I are doing more than what I have listed here because we are giving to the Cooperative Program through our offerings. We are going wherever Southern Baptists send missionaries throughout the world. We are seeking to fulfil this commission by praying, going and by giving to our mission endeavors. Many in the future will go to Kentucky and then we may have other places which the Missions Team will encourage us to participate in. We will continue to seek to reach the people of Anderson with the Gospel of Christ through various ministries which we have set up presently.

In Christ’s mandate we are to go…, or as some have said it means, while we are going we are to do what Jesus has said. So, while you are going about your life here in Anderson, South Carolina, when you see people and have conversations with them, share the Gospel of Christ, tell your story of salvation, give a witness to God’s love in your life through a story of God’s mercy through His acts of love to you and your family.

We are to, as we go, make disciples. In sharing the Gospel with those to whom we witness and they are interested, we encourage them to become a believer and help them in any way we can to trust Christ as their Savior and Lord. It may be that we lead them to pray the sinner’s prayer or that we encourage them to come to church with us or that we ask someone else to reach out to them and share the love of God. Our mandate is to lead people to Christ as disciples. Once they have received Christ, then encourage them to be baptized. Now we all don’t baptize people whom we lead to Christ because our tradition is that the act of baptism is one of two ordinances of the church, which primarily the church performs. So our job is to encourage them to join a church fellowship where they would be baptized in the name of the Father, and the Son and of the Holy Spirit.
Our next part of the mandate is to teach people what Jesus taught His disciples and what the other disciples taught in the Scripture, to those who become disciples themselves. How do we do that? There are so many various ways to do that but let us just look at what we have done or could do here. We disciple boys and girls, men and women through Sunday School, some say just Bible study. Bible study can also be small groups and the old time “Training Union.” Who remembers that? Any kind of youth group study that comes in all kinds of flavors too. We could disciple personally, one on one, or there could be a larger group, like at prayer meeting on Wednesday evenings. They could be in a public Bible study like the men’s study on Thursday morning at Mama Penn's or they could be in private at your home or at church. They could come in the form of one person teaching another or several in the group learning the Word of God through discussion. Discipleship could look like G. A,’s or R. A.’s, or ladies groups or even Missions Friends, it could be through Bible Drill. Now some of this kind of discipleship is also sharing the Gospel with children or adults who are not ready to receive Christ but in preparation for that to come later. Leading people, big or small, to learn more of what Christ taught is discipleship. Notice though, we are to teach people to observe what Christ taught, seeking to get them to emulate what Jesus did while He was here. We don’t just want to teach but we want people to be changed by the Gospel and their lives become more and more like Jesus their Savior and Lord.
There is much more about teaching people and leading people in discipleship but you may need to discover that on your own. The rest of the mandated Scripture reminds us that our Savior is not leaving us alone to do these things He commanded us to do. He is going to be WITH us to the very end of the age in the person of the Holy Spirit. Which basically means He will be with us until we are taken home to be with Him in heaven.

Our commitment here at NABC is to continue to touch lives with the Gospel of Jesus Christ through any means that the Spirit of God leads us. Our goal is to reach men and women and boys and girls with the Gospel and to make sure they become growing, mature Christians. Only God can do that and yet He uses His church, us, to accomplish His mandate. One of the ways we will do this in the next year is to major on the emphasis called “Who’s Your One” Each of us will be called on to choose one person who is lost and to become their friend, loving them as Jesus loves you and pray that they will become a Christian and do whatever you need to do to help them surrender to Christ as their Savior and Lord and then to become baptized into the church fellowship.
You have come today to NABC, have you come to worship the Lord Jesus because you know that Jesus has forgiven you of your sin and you have met Him personally as your Savior and Lord? Or, are you someone who has come but you do not know Christ as your Savior and Lord and you really need to have a Savior to save you of your sins and give you eternal life? Today we invite you to surrender your life to Jesus and allow Him to forgive you of all your sins and give you eternal life. He says, “Everyone who calls on the name of the Lord will be saved.” (Romans 10:13)

Dear friend if you are reading this by way of the internet please know that you are loved and cared for. If you have no relationship with God the Father through Jesus Christ His Son, then I invite you to trust Him by faith and receive Him as your personal Savior. Jesus Christ died on the cross for the sin of everyone in the world that they may have eternal life. All of us have sinned and all are guilty before Almighty God who made us to have fellowship with Him. But sin broke that ability to have a relationship and Jesus has restored the possibility to know God personally through His sacrifice. Please know that if you will seek God and turn from your sin and pray He will respond with His love and give to you a personal relationship through your belief in His Son and the sacrifice He made just for you. He will call for a change in your life too. He wants you to follow Him, not the world, not your own desires, but to follow Jesus. That brings a life change when you turn from sin and self and by faith believe in Jesus Christ as your Savior and Lord. There is no Savior without Him being Lord of your life. Your willingness to change by following Him daily in your life will be the proof of your faith. When life throws its curves your way and you have found yourself broken by others or by the world let us introduce you to the only One who can help you…Jesus! You can write or call the office and we will follow up by contacting you. Office phone number is 864-225-2575 and the website address is and the physical address is 2308 N. Main St., Anderson, SC 29621.
