Cults use this scripture to try and tell others that Jesus was created. Paul is writing this letter to the church of Colossae to address to them about the Supremacy of Christ. Colossae was teaching that Jesus was just another created being from God. New Testament scholar D.A. Carson wrote “They may have spoken of Christ in warm terms, but in the last resort they saw him as a created being and therefore he is less than God”.
But Paul is making it very clear that Jesus is the eternal God who created all things! Look in verse 15, the image in Greek means icon, and icon is used to show an object that is shaped to resemble the form or appearance of something. Paul tells us that he IS the form of God.
Romans 9:5 says “The ancestors are theirs and from them, by physical descent came the Messiah who is God over all, praised forever, Amen!”
Verse 16 talks about Jesus being the firstborn. This word can be used to describe someone as literally firstborn from a family. I am the firstborn of my immediate family. But Paul is talking about the preeminence of Christ. Firstborn in Greek means Prōtotokos and that word literally means preeminent. Psalms 89:27 says “I will make him my firstborn. Greatest of the Kings of the Earth
