The author here warns of the coming judgment for those who willfully reject Christ’s offer of salvation. His purpose in talking about this is to exhort these Jewish believers in their faith because they were being tempted to reject Christ for Judaism. God’s judgment isn’t based on church membership but on whether or not we have faith in Christ. Every believer is called to regularly check the authenticity of their confession.
