The INDIVIDUALS(Acts 3:1-2)

“Now Peter and John were going up to the temple at the ninth hour, the hour of prayer.” (Acts 3:1)

Peter and John were going to the temple a

The ninth hour = 3pm which was one of the busiest times

As a result, many beggars would have been there

“A man who had been lame from his mother’s womb (over 40 years years)...set down every day at the gate...to beg alms of those entering the temple." (Acts 3:2)

He had been lame from birth (over 40 years - Acts 4:22)

He had been taken to the temple gate to beg for alms
The INQUIRY (Acts 3:3-6)

He is asking for alms with no thought of being healed
Jesus never healed this him
No one else at the temple gate was healed by Peter and John
Healing is based on the sovereignty of God

The RESPONSE(v4-6)
The Apostles have no money to give the man
Instead, they command him to walk in the name of Jesus
The INCIDENT(Acts 3:7-10)
He gets strength in his leg and perfect coordination
His healing was instantaneous and complete

What is the purpose of healing?

GOD is GLORIFIED (v9-10)

GOSPEL is GIVEN (v11-26)
The INSTRUCTION(James 5:13-18)

The TYPE of the Sickness (v14a)

James is dealing specifically with physical sickness

Sick = a serious condition (John 4:46-47; Acts 9:37)
The TREATMENT of the Sickness(v14b-15)

The need to CALL(v14)
The sick person is to take the initiative to call for the Elders
The Elders are to anoint the sick person and pray for them

The need to CONFESS (v15-16a)
- The prayer offered in faith will restore the sick one
- God does heal
- This is based on God’s will (1 John 5:4) and it is not always God’s will to heal
- If he committed sins, they will be forgiven him
- This refers to specific sin which has caused the illness
- If this is due to sin God promises to heal and to forgive

The TRUST for the Sickness
God could heal us!
God could give us grace to endure the sickness!
God could take us home
