Culture Code Two:Honour
In this series we are exploring the values and priorities that should shape the culture of the church. Last week we began with what should be the defining cultural value of the church, LOVE. This week we talk about Honour.

The Apostle Paul called for those in the church to honour others above themselves.

To honour someone literally means to assign to them value and worth. The culture of the church is to be one in which each person considers others of greater worth than themselves.

Who holds the most value in your life?
How do we demonstrate honour towards others?
Who should be honoured in the church?
In the church, as in the world, those who are in positions of leadership and responsibility should be honoured.

However, in the church, unlike the world, honour doesn’t stop with those at the top but is especially expressed towards those people who are typically considered less worthy of honour.

Who do you find it hard to honour in the church? Why do you think that is?
What is the key to building a culture of honour?
Pride is the enemy of a culture of honour. (See Galatians 5:26) Pride competes to be recognised and valued.

On the other hand, honour assigns value to others. The key to building a culture of honour is developing personal humility.

So how do you become more humble?
If you are going to be truly humble, here is the thing…
Jesus is the model mindset that Paul calls for us to mimic when it comes to honour and humility. Jesus was truly humble, but he didn’t have a low view of his own value. Jesus knew that he was “in very nature God.” It was from a place of knowing how extraordinarily valuable he was that Jesus was able to express true humility and honour others above himself.
What do you need to know about you?

2. How do humility and honour work together?
3. “Low self-worth is an enemy of true humility.” Do you agree with this statement? Why or why not?

4 Jesus described one tangible and practical way of expressing both humility and honour in his own culture. What are some tangible examples of how we may honour each other in todays culture?
5. Are there areas of the church community that you think should be honoured more than they are now? What steps can you take to begin to express honour to them?
