Conversation Starters help us dig deeper, connecting Sunday’s sermons with our everyday lives. These prompts have been designed to help Community Groups grow in their relationship with God, with one another, and with their neighbors.
Genesis 12:1-3 is critical to the story of Genesis. Abram’s call to boldly follow God’s command by faith shapes the rest of the narrative. First, Abram is called by God to go to a new place. Second, God gives Abram a triad of promises: land, seed, blessing. Then, throughout the rest of Genesis, God demonstrates His faithfulness to Abram, even as Abram is faithless.
Has there been a time when you felt like God called you to step out in faith and you didn’t know how things would end up? What happened?
READ Genesis 12:1-3. Some have called this passage ‘a call to adventure.’ God calls Abram away from what he knows (his country and his home) and into the unknown (a land that God has not yet disclosed to him). Practically, what is God asking Abram to risk by following this call?
Has anyone ever looked at you and said, “You’re crazy!” because of your faith? If not, is that a good thing? Why or why not?
Would you describe yourself as a blessing to others? To your friends? Your boss? Your spouse? Your children? Your coworkers? Why or why not?
Abram’s call requires him to risk a lot, but the responsibility is really on God to follow through on His promises. As you reflect on your story, how has God remained faithful to you?
PRAY. Praise the Lord for his faithfulness and his plan of redemption. Ask Him to lead you into greater allegiance and dependance as you continue down the path of costly discipleship.
