SERMON: “Lies We Believe” John 8:31-32 (part 2)

“Because Satan’s main weapon is deception, we must be prepared to answer his lies with God’s truth.”

1. I Have Done Pretty Well, 1 Chronicles 21:1-7

2. I Am Only One, Exodus 3:11

3. Men Are Saved by Works, Romans 10:2-3

“God’s truth is the best defense against Satan’s lies.”

“God’s truth is the best defense against Satan’s lies.”

Read the following passages that deal with the Word of God. Summarize some basic principles that they depict and what encouragement comes from this us. Psalm 1:2, 119:105; Proverbs 30:5; Isaiah 40:8; John 17:17; 2 Timothy 4:2; Hebrews 4:12; 1 Peter 2:2.

Review the following texts that deal with the subject of truth. What are their implications for us as believers, and what principles do they illustrate regarding God? Numbers 23:19; 1 Kings 8:56; Psalm 119:160; John 1:14, 14:16-17; 16:13; 1 John 5:20.

Review these passages and identify the underlying and uniting principles they illustrate: Deuteronomy 8:11-14; Job 12:10, 34:14-15; Proverbs 30:8-9; Jeremiah 2:13, 17:5; Acts 17:25. Why is this trap so easy for us to fall into?

The following Scriptures each contain the thought “one”. Review them and share how they bring encourage and confidence to one’s heart. Joshua 23:14; Matthew 10:29-31; Luke 15:1-10; Romans 14:7-8; John 13:34, 14:6; Romans 3:10, 12, 5:15, 19.

Reflect on the passages noted that deal with works and grace. What truths are evidenced in these texts, and what is the application for us? Job 25:4; Romans 10:3; Galatians 3:1-5; Philippians 3:2-9; Ephesians 2:8-9; Romans 3:21-24; Titus 3:4-7. Why is grace such a hard concept for us to rightly receive?
