No Turning Back
Today is week 2 of our series, “Hold Nothing Back.” In this series we are exploring the things that keep us from being All In for Jesus and his kingdom. Today we look at the things that keep us looking over our shoulder or turning back on the journey.
Elisha was busy ploughing his field when the prophet Elijah came by and threw his cloak over him. Elisha’s response was to have an unexpected BBQ and to set out following the prophet Elijah. He made sure there was no chance of turning back on his calling.
What tempts you to turn back on following Jesus?
About 800 years later Jesus talked about ploughing in a different kind of way…
Just like Elisha had a calling to follow Elijah we have a calling to follow Jesus
As disciples of Jesus our calling is to worship Jesus as Lord and to make disciples, baptise them and teach them to follow Jesus. Elisha clearly understood what the cloak thrown on his shoulders meant for the rest of his life. Do we understand what the calling that Jesus has for us means for the rest of ours?
Is it time to have your own barbeque?
What things keep you looking over your should when you should be focussed on Jesus? What things tempt you to turn back on the calling and journey of being Jesus’ disciple? Perhaps like Elisha, it is time to have your own barbeque and remove the temptation to turn back.

As our life groups gather this week, we have attached our reference verse and some questions to prompt a deeper discussion and search into this week's topic.

If you are not currently part of a life group, and would like to join a small group of like minded people in fellowship and connection during the week, please contact Nick on 0417472474 to register your interest.
2. If “putting your hand to the plough” is a metaphor for discipleship, why is Jesus so critical of those who turn back?
3. Elisha changed his whole life because he had a clear calling to be the next prophetic leader of Israel. Do you have a clear sense of calling to follow Jesus as his disciple?
4. How do these words form Jesus shape your understanding of your calling as a disciple?
5. Like Elisha’s plough and oxen is there anything that you need to leave behind to be all in for Jesus and his kingdom?
Discussion Questions
1. Have you ever had a time in your life that you have made a dramatic change like Elisha in this story? What did that look like?
