Parents are the protection of their children, making the family, through the love they show, a safe and secure place for all who are a part. Using Nehemiah’s example, parents need to:
1) First, pray to the Lord God who is great and awesome (terrible).
Nehemiah prayed many times for his family, the Jews who were trying to re-established and build back up the city of Jerusalem. (Vv. 4-5, 9, (But we prayed to our God and posted a guard day and night to meet this threat.) Not just in those verses do we hear of Nehemiah and the people praying but so many others throughout the book. Parents need to pray for their families long before the children are born asking God for His protection over their family. In His perfect will, if God allows children to be born, then He will continue to touch the lives of all who are a part of that family for the glory and honor due His name. As parents we see so much around us that might seek to harm our family. There is evil everywhere, some spiritual and some physical, emotional and mental. Evil exists in this world to kill, steal and destroy. (John 10:10, The thief comes only to steal and kill and destroy; I have come that they may have life, and have it to the full.) We need to be vigilant and pray that God will prevent trials but if they get through, past our protection, then we seek His power to face them head on.
Once when our precious Erica was about three or four, she began to act very different. She would withdraw and seek to hide behind the door and just be out of character to who she really was. Lynda and I were at First Baptist Dallas at the time and attending a conference called “Spiritual Warfare.” After learning that the evil one wants to hurt the family by oppressing children with an evil spirit, we began to sense this was what was happening to her. With many days and nights seeking God for her, praying throughout the house and demanding that any evil spirit that might have been present to leave and be gone from our home, we then every night after our precious one was asleep, knelt and prayed fervently seeking God’s power and blessing over her, all the while asking God to cleanse her little body of any evil influence that might have tried to harm her. It wasn’t long after that, that she became her old self again.
Spiritual warfare is real and only through the power of prayer can we see God work on the behalf of our families. What are the problems that you keep facing with your children. I may not know yours and so each may be different but they all come under those basic categories I mentioned. We see the world trying everything they can to influence our children on a physical, emotional and mental level to try things that will destroy them. The traditional things are still out there: alcohol, smoking, pornography, develing into sex and the things that go with experiences that lead to early sexual involvement, drugs of all kinds but now there are so many other things that seek to destroy our children even if they don’t see it. The wrong crowds that they hang with, the influence of things that come over the media, whether it is by phone or video or movies. Parents have a great responsibility to guide and direct their children in what they think is the best for them. As they grow if you have guided them correctly they will have a better chance in making Godly decisions on their own. Sometimes through your prayers and simple guidance that hand of God leads to where they then can make quality decisions on their own. Being on your knees praying for your family is the best way to start.
