Let’s put our scripture in context. Nehemiah has come from Babylon out of exile to rebuild the walls Jerusalem. But when he gets there he finds there is great opposition to his presence and purpose. The enemies have ridiculed the idea and slandered his name and the people of God. Look at verses 4-5 to see what Nehemiah has to say to God about the situation,
As their leader he sought to inspire the people of God with all his heart. With prayer and bold leadership Nehemiah stood strong with the Jewish community.
The enemies sought in every way to destroy the work and the people of God. But the news came to them about the plans the enemy had laid out to attack and overcome the Jews in Jerusalem. Nehemiah as the leader, put guards by families, everywhere he could to prevent an attack. And our focus verse then says,
They continued strong and resolute to defend their families with the help of the Lord God, who was their protector.

The subject of today is “Your Home is Worth Fighting For.” With that said, in today’s world we see enemies of all kinds seeking to destroy our own family and we need to do everything in our power to fight hard to protect it.
The Family's A Little Book
The family is a little book,
The children are the leaves,
The parents are the cover that
Safe protection gives.
At first, pages of the book
Are blank, and smooth, and fair;
But time soon writeth memories,
And painteth pictures there.
Love is the golden clasp
That bindeth up the trust;
O break it not, lest all the leaves
Shall scatter like the dust.

Parents are the protection of their children, making the family, through the love they show, a safe and secure place for all who are a part. Using Nehemiah’s example, parents need to:

1) First, pray to the Lord God who is great and awesome (terrible).

Nehemiah prayed many times for his family, the Jews who were trying to re-established and build back up the city of Jerusalem. (Vv. 4-5, 9, (But we prayed to our God and posted a guard day and night to meet this threat.) Not just in those verses do we hear of Nehemiah and the people praying but so many others throughout the book. Parents need to pray for their families long before the children are born asking God for His protection over their family. In His perfect will, if God allows children to be born, then He will continue to touch the lives of all who are a part of that family for the glory and honor due His name. As parents we see so much around us that might seek to harm our family. There is evil everywhere, some spiritual and some physical, emotional and mental. Evil exists in this world to kill, steal and destroy. (John 10:10, The thief comes only to steal and kill and destroy; I have come that they may have life, and have it to the full.) We need to be vigilant and pray that God will prevent trials but if they get through, past our protection, then we seek His power to face them head on.

Once when our precious Erica was about three or four, she began to act very different. She would withdraw and seek to hide behind the door and just be out of character to who she really was. Lynda and I were at First Baptist Dallas at the time and attending a conference called “Spiritual Warfare.” After learning that the evil one wants to hurt the family by oppressing children with an evil spirit, we began to sense this was what was happening to her. With many days and nights seeking God for her, praying throughout the house and demanding that any evil spirit that might have been present to leave and be gone from our home, we then every night after our precious one was asleep, knelt and prayed fervently seeking God’s power and blessing over her, all the while asking God to cleanse her little body of any evil influence that might have tried to harm her. It wasn’t long after that, that she became her old self again.

Spiritual warfare is real and only through the power of prayer can we see God work on the behalf of our families. What are the problems that you keep facing with your children. I may not know yours and so each may be different but they all come under those basic categories I mentioned. We see the world trying everything they can to influence our children on a physical, emotional and mental level to try things that will destroy them. The traditional things are still out there: alcohol, smoking, pornography, develing into sex and the things that go with experiences that lead to early sexual involvement, drugs of all kinds but now there are so many other things that seek to destroy our children even if they don’t see it. The wrong crowds that they hang with, the influence of things that come over the media, whether it is by phone or video or movies. Parents have a great responsibility to guide and direct their children in what they think is the best for them. As they grow if you have guided them correctly they will have a better chance in making Godly decisions on their own. Sometimes through your prayers and simple guidance that hand of God leads to where they then can make quality decisions on their own. Being on your knees praying for your family is the best way to start.
2) Second, parents need to set about a watch over their family.

Nehemiah set out, by families, a watch that would help call the alarm if the enemy were to approach. What if we were constantly watching for the things of the world that might seek to destroy our family? Through the power of prayer, we can seek to prevent the difficulties coming our way and then by being vigilant in our efforts to watch over all those under our charge, making sure that their lives are filled with that which can only help them and not harm them.

Being a positive parent for sure helps being a person that looks for the good in others but is cautious when the Lord alerts us to a possible problem. Having a loving spirit about us rubs off on the children, they can see your faith and love in the Lord then they too can realize what is good for them. When trouble comes they can see your faith and trust in this great and awesome God and realize, they too in their troubles, can rely on Him as well. What they see you practice, they will emulate.
Having your children in church learning the things of God in a loving atmosphere always helps. We all know people and maybe you were one of them, that said, “I went to church and did that Sunday School thing but it wasn’t real to or for me.” It is the people who are around them, the church, you and me and the home from which they come and the real Jesus that they heard of, that makes all the difference in the world in children staying close to the Lord and following Christ.
Let me give you another example.

I had a young man who is out and own his own now text me the other day. He was asking for some advice and as I responded partly by reminding him of Proverbs 3:5-6, here is what he said, “Yes sir. One of my favorites Miss Lynda taught us in Bible Drill. Really been thanking God lately for the difference my upbringing and people like you and Lynda and things like Bible Drill have made in my life. Made all the difference in the world. Thank you.” Now let me say that this young adult had great parents that taught him well and loved on him and prayed for him too.

So, another way to help your children is to get them to know the Bible for themselves. Teach them at home to read and understand the Bible through family devotions and then add to that Bible Buddies and Bible Drill which is an excellent way to prepare your children to meet the world with God in their heart.

God's protective care of His children is aptly illustrated by Dr. Donald Grey Barnhouse—
"A picture on a small screen shows a mother, father and child walking along. The mother and the father slap and shake the child until the child's teeth rattle, and the child begins to whimper. They slap and strike the child—until watchers say, 'How cruel!'"But look at it in wide-angle: it's forty degrees below zero in Dakota in the middle of the winter; the three have had to abandon their car to walk to safety. The child wants to lie down in the snow and go to sleep; the parents are striking the child to keep it from dying."When you look at God and the world and see the evil that is in the world, all you are seeing is a little 18-inch screen. But learn to see it in the light of the whole of God's Word and works."

Can your children be safe in such a world like ours that seems to be falling apart each passing day? I don’t want to sound so negative but there are troubles in our society and the evil one is using them to destroy what we call the real building blocks of the society which we love, the immediate traditional family.
Safe Because Jesus Holds Me
A busy mother once overheard her two young daughters talking. One asked the other,
"How do you know you are safe?"
"Because I am holding Jesus tight with both my hands," replied the sister.
"That is not safe," said the other, "suppose the devil came along and cut
off your two hands?"
The little sister was momentarily troubled, then her face suddenly beamed with joy.
"Oh, I forgot! Jesus is holding me, and Satan couldn't cut off His hands, so I am safe!"
This little girl had grasped the meaning of our Savior's words, "...I give them [my sheep] eternal life, and they shall never perish; neither shall anyone snatch them out of my hand"(John 10:28).
If your children and you as parents believe that truth then you will have the power to rise above the evils of this world and carry on.

Asking the great and awesome God of Nehemiah to protect and guide your family is so important and there is no substitute.

Yes, we are to watchful over our own. But all the while our God is watchful over us too.
A mother and her little four-year-old daughter were preparing to retire for the night. The child was afraid of the dark, and the mother, on this occasion alone with the child, felt fearful also. When the light was out, the child caught a glimpse of the moon outside the window. "Mother," she asked, "is the moon God's light?" "Yes," said the mother. The next question was, "Will God put out His light and go to sleep?" The mother replied, "No, my child, God never goes to sleep." Then out of a simplicity of a child's faith, she said that which gave reassurance to the fearful mother, "Well, as long as God is awake, there is no sense both of us staying awake." (Psalm 121:4, “indeed, he who watches over Israel will neither slumber nor sleep.”)

There are all kinds of ways to fight for your family. What you choose surely needs to include praying for them and watching over them with all of your hearts.

Today, our prayer for you is that God, that we serve, whom we know as our Lord great and awesome God, Jesus Christ, will guide you to do what is best for your family while we pray for you to surrender your whole heart and life to Him and give Him complete freedom to do as He pleases to bring you into a perfect relationship with the Father.

Today, Lord Jesus see deeply into our hearts and know our thoughts and needs. Each of us, young and old, need to walk with you in truth and grace. For some here Lord, do not know you at all through your Son, Jesus Christ. I pray that you will, by your Holy Spirit, help all them to see that Jesus Christ is the perfect Son, who came to this earth to give His life for each of us and our families, that we might know the Father in Heaven personally through Him. To realize that Jesus is our salvation and our life. Help them to believe that You came to this earth to die for their sin and that You were buried and then arose from the dead to give each who believe in Him eternal life with you in heaven forever and ever. But, we know that life begins NOW when we trust You as our own Savior and Lord. You will guide and direct their life to love You and follow You each day of their life. Would You save them right now.
For each parent I pray that they will rededicated themselves to You to protect and serve their family with love, grace and truth. And every child or youth here will consecrate themselves to You and ask that You live full and free in their life.

For our folks who are here who have no family left at home, but like me and Lynda, have a family to pray for and seek to help guide, may we commit to do our very best to help those who we love to know You personally and to be protected from the evil one. Lord may we all here, young and old, seek to live our life pleasing to You, our heavenly Father, that You will be glorified and honored in our life.

Dear friend if you are reading this by way of the internet please know that you are loved and cared for. If you have no relationship with God the Father through Jesus Christ His Son, then I invite you to trust Him by faith and receive Him as your personal Savior. Jesus Christ died on the cross for the sin of everyone in the world that they may have eternal life. All of us have sinned and all are guilty before Almighty God who made us to have fellowship with Him. But sin broke that ability to have a relationship and Jesus has restored the possibility to know God personally through His sacrifice. Please know that if you will seek God and turn from your sin and pray He will respond with His love and give to you a personal relationship through your belief in His Son and the sacrifice He made just for you. He will call for a change in your life too. He wants you to follow Him, not the world, not your own desires, but to follow Jesus. That brings a life change when you turn from sin and self and by faith believe in Jesus Christ as your Savior and Lord. There is no Savior without Him being Lord of your life. Your willingness to change by following Him daily in your life will be the proof of your faith.
