Listening Passionately to God
Super Bowl Sunday! In the 1890s, the football huddle was created by Gallaudet — the famed college for the deaf in Washington, D.C. Because Gallaudet used sign language to call their plays, they needed a way to prevent their opponent from “hearing” Gallaudet’s strategies. Thus - the creation of the huddle. Today, Gallaudet no longer uses the huddle because the odds of the opposition “hearing” their plans and responding in a matter of seconds is slim to none. In Luke 2:39-52, Mary and Joseph accidentally leave twelve-year-old Jesus back at the Temple while they headed back home almost 100 miles away! It took them a full day to even notice he was missing! When they found Jesus back at the Temple they ask him “Why did you do this to us?!” Jesus replies, “Why did you think I would be anywhere else?” They both were speaking but neither heard the other. They were listening “for” the answer they sought but not listening “to” the answer provided. This week as you go about your business, ask yourself “Am I listening “for” God’s voice or am I listening “to” God’s voice.

Background: TONS!!
“Every year his parents went to Jerusalem for the Feast of the Passover.” Luke 2:41
Jerusalem 12 A.D. - Population
50-100,000 people
Swells to 250,000 to 3,000,000 (??)
By 70 A.D. = 6,000 lawyers
By 70 A.D. = 2,700,000 inside during the siege by Rome
Jerusalem – The Travel
Joseph and family travel 93 miles ON FOOT from Nazareth.
Uphill! (1100 ft to 2400 ft)
Travel in a convoy
Jerusalem – The Party!
“Three times a year you are to celebrate a festival to me.” Ex. 23:14-19.

-Feast of Unleavened Bread (March/April)
-Feast of the Harvest (May/June)
-Feast of the Ingathering (Sept/Oct)

NOTE: No Feast “travel” was required in Winter. (Mark 13:18)
Jerusalem – Passover

-“Three times a year you are to celebrate a festival to me.” Ex. 23:14-19.

-Feast of Unleavened Bread is the day AFTER Passover.
-Joseph’s family “went to Jerusalem for the Feast of the Passover.”
-Joseph’s family came to celebrate the sacrifice of the lamb and the Death Angel “passing over” the house of the Hebrews in Egypt.
Jesus – 12 A.D. – Bar Mitzvah-ed
-Jesus is somewhere between 12 and 13 years old
-At age 13, he would be Bar Mitzvah-ed
--He would study, be tested
--He would become a “Son of the Commandments” or a “Son of the Law”
--Once Bar Mitzvah-ed, he – like his dad – is required to follow the law
--Required to make the three trips.
Update the Numbers
-Mom and Dad live in Albuquerque, NM. They are driving to Yuba City, CA, in a caravan full of extended family and “other folks.” Yuba City/Marysville has about 75,000 people that will swell by 100,000 the day they get there.
Why do we care? JESUS GETS LOST!!!

-After the festivities, they load in the car, and caravan for south. Dad’s in a hurry to get home so they push through to Los Angeles for stopping for rest break….
-6 hours! 427 miles!!!
-They get out to stretch their legs and somebody says….
Jesus Found
-It’s too late to travel.
-They set out the next day – back to Yuba City
-They set out the next day – back to Jerusalem
-They find him at the Temple
-Mom (Mary)
--“Son, why have you treated us like this? Your father and I have been anxiously searching for you.”
--“Why were you searching for me?”, he asked. “Did you know I had to be in my Father’s house?”
-Both Perhaps
--“But they did not understand what he was saying to them.”
Listening “FOR” not listening “TO”

-Neither was listening “TO” the other.
-They were both listening “FOR” a preconceived idea/response.
-Joseph and Mary wanted a specific answer
--They weren’t listening to Jesus response
-Jesus assume Joseph and Mary would just “know” where to find him.
--Jesus (12 year old child) is not listening to the fear in the voice of his parents.

THAT is the problem with hearing from God
-We listen “FOR” God but not “TO” God.
-God , what’s your will for my life?
-Alexa – What the heck’s wrong with this thing?”
-Alexa – Who many did “Satchel" Paige (Baseball great Leroy Robert) July 7, 1906 – June 8, 1982)
--“Satchel Paige is dead.”

-Our response: I don’t know about that.
Generally Speaking - In to the Woods!
-“The wrath of God is being revealed from the heaven against all the godlessness and wickedness of men who suppress ye truth by their wickedness, since what may be known about God is plain to them. For since the creation of the world God’s invisible qualities – have been clearly seen, being understood from what has been made, so that men are without excuse.” Ro. 1:18-21
-“For although they knew God, they neither glorified him as God nor gave thanks to him, but their thinking became futile and their foolish hearts darkened..” Ro. 1:21.

Specially Speaking - Tune in!
-Tune in – Family Thing
-Tune in – New Channels
--OPEN….THE…..BOOK! OR…like a man looking in the mirror.
--Until you tune in specifically to the message of God you wont even know what you don’t know. “My sheep hear my voice.”
--Three channels of 300?
-Tune in – Fine tune (Turn the ring!)
Specially Speaking - Tune in!
-“22 Do not merely listen to the word, and so deceive yourselves. Do what it says. 23 Anyone who listens to the word but does not do what it says is like someone who looks at his face in a mirror 24 and, after looking at himself, goes away and immediately forgets what he looks like. 25 But whoever looks intently into the perfect law that gives freedom, and continues in it—not forgetting what they have heard, but doing it—they will be blessed in what they do.” James 1:22-25
Listen Intently “TO” GOD
-“He who answers before listening – that is his folly and his shame.” Prov. 18:13
-Make space
--Start with the premise that He does speak!
--Jesus sought teachers
--Looked for the specific gift God had for Him.
--Then He shut up!
--Only then did he ask questions.
Listen Submissively “TO” GOD
-The teachers were amazed at Jesus’ understanding.
-Submitted himself to God

--Expected to make a change based on what He heard – if not you’re wasting your breath.
--“I don’t know ‘bout that.”
Listen Expectantly “TO” GOD
-Get rid of the world’s auto-fill
--If you are not listening “expectantly” TO GOD, the world will rob you of your victory. They will steal your miracle.
-Listen for God’s auto-fill
--Conviction vs. Condemnation
--Build up vs. Tearing down
--God vs. Satan

How do I know it’s God?
-Listen through Jesus
--God’s too big to wrap our head’s around.
-Ask: Is this act consistent with the Word?
-Ask: Is this approach consistent with how God shaped me? Wired me?
-Ask: Will that action make me more like Jesus?
-Ask: Does it built up or tear down?

L-I-S-T-E-N “TO” God – not “FOR” God
-Now – Go do it
