God’s Original Design
Our Path of Sin Leads To Brokenness
This world is broken because of sin.
“…for all have sinned and fall short of the glory of God…”
The Gospel Provides the Way Of salvation
The Way Back To God’s Design is to Pursue and Recover
There are two reasons we struggle with the concept of obedience:
1. What we learn—that we earn everything.
2. What we love—Sin is attractive and most people love the feeling or comfort their sins bring them and that’s why we hold on to them.
“And this is the judgment: the light has come into the world, and people loved the darkness rather than the light because their works were evil.”
1 John 5:1-5
“Everyone who believes that Jesus is the Christ has been born of God, and everyone who loves the Father loves whoever has been born of him. By this we know that we love the children of God, when we love God and obey his commandments. For this is the love of God, that we keep his commandments. And his commandments are not burdensome. For everyone who has been born of God overcomes the world. And this is the victory that has overcome the world—our faith. Who is it that overcomes the world except the one who believes that Jesus is the Son of God?”
Here are several things we need to understand about obedience…
Obeying God Reveals That He Is Our Father
“What good is it, my brothers, if someone says he has faith but does not have works? Can that faith save him? If a brother or sister is poorly clothed and lacking in daily food, and one of you says to them, ‘Go in peace, be warmed and filled,’ without giving them the things needed for the body, what good is that? So also faith by itself, if it does not have works, is dead. But someone will say, ‘You have faith and I have works.’ Show me your faith apart from your works, and I will show you my faith by my works. You believe that God is one; you do well. Even the demons believe—and shudder!"
Obeying God Reveals That We Love Him
Obedience to God is never to be practiced in hope that we will gain God’s affection, obedience is lived out as an expression of love to God who has first loved us.
1 John 4:19
“We love because he first loved us.”
1 John 4:9
“In this the love of God was made manifest among us, that God sent his only Son into the world, so that we might live through him.”
The response of love that we have for God will be revealed through our obedience to him!
“If you love me, you will keep my commandments.”
1 John 5:3
“For this is the love of God, that we keep his commandments. And his commandments are not burdensome.”
Jesus is the greatest example for a life of obedience.
“Jesus said to them, ‘My food is to do the will of him who sent me and to accomplish his work.’ ”
“For I have come down from heaven, not to do my own will but the will of him who sent me.”
“So Jesus said to them, ‘When you have lifted up the Son of Man, then you will know that I am he, and that I do nothing on my own authority, but speak just as the Father taught me. And he who sent me is with me. He has not left me alone, for I always do the things that are pleasing to him.’ ”
Ultimately, For His Glory and For Our Good
“But the one who looks into the perfect law, the law of liberty, and perseveres, being no hearer who forgets but a doer who acts, he will be blessed in his doing.”
“Blessed is everyone who fears the Lord, who walks in his ways!”
So what do we do when we blow it?
1 John 1:9
“If we confess our sins, he is faithful and just to forgive us our sins and to cleanse us from all unrighteousness.”
