Psalm 51:17 (ESV)
The sacrifices of God are a broken spirit; a broken and contrite heart, O God, you will not despise.
Gideon and his army had to be broken to understand their inability to attain victory apart from God, so that He could use them.
“Whenever God means to make a man great, He always breaks him into pieces first.” – C.H. Spurgeon
Judges 7:1-7
Then Jerubbaal (that is, Gideon) and all the people who were with him rose early and encamped beside the spring of Harod. And the camp of Midian was north of them, by the hill of Moreh, in the valley. 2 The Lord said to Gideon, “The people with you are too many for me to give the Midianites into their hand, lest Israel boast over me, saying, ‘My own hand has saved me.’ 3 Now therefore proclaim in the ears of the people, saying, ‘Whoever is fearful and trembling, let him return home and hurry away from Mount Gilead.’” Then 22,000 of the people returned, and 10,000 remained. 4 And the Lord said to Gideon, “The people are still too many. Take them down to the water, and I will test them for you there, and anyone of whom I say to you, ‘This one shall go with you,’ shall go with you, and anyone of whom I say to you, ‘This one shall not go with you,’ shall not go.” 5 So he brought the people down to the water. And the Lord said to Gideon, “Everyone who laps the water with his tongue, as a dog laps, you shall set by himself. Likewise, everyone who kneels down to drink.” 6 And the number of those who lapped, putting their hands to their mouths, was 300 men, but all the rest of the people knelt down to drink water. 7 And the Lord said to Gideon, “With the 300 men who lapped I will save you and give the Midianites into your hand, and let all the others go every man to his home.”
The limitations of believers point to the unlimited power of God in our lives. God carefully breaks our desire to act independently of Him.
1) Chastisement – God addresses specific areas of sin in the believer’s life
2) Punishment – God judges sin in the unbeliever’s life
3) Brokenness – God addresses underlying issues of the heart in the believer’s life
1) Pride 2) Misunderstanding 3) Fear 4) Idolatry 5) Rebellion
Psalm 34:18
The Lord is near to the brokenhearted and saves the crushed in spirit.
1) Decreased intimacy with God
2) Delaying of God’s plans in your life
4) Limitation of your usefulness
The apostle Peter is a Biblical example of both resistance and eventual surrender to God’s breaking in his life for usefulness.
John 13:8
Peter said to him, “You shall never wash my feet.” Jesus answered him, “If I do not wash you, you have no share with me.”
Matthew 26:34-35
Jesus said to him, “Truly, I tell you, this very night, before the rooster crows, you will deny me three times.” 35 Peter said to him, “Even if I must die with you, I will not deny you!” And all the disciples said the same.
Luke 22:62
And he went out and wept bitterly.
Jesus modeled the beauty of brokenness.
Matthew 26:26
Now as they were eating, Jesus took bread, and after blessing it broke it and gave it to the disciples, and said, “Take, eat; this is my body.”
Luke 22:42
“Father, if you are willing, remove this cup from me. Nevertheless, not my will, but yours, be done.”
The Holy Spirit breaks us, so He can lead us into the ultimate joy of intimacy with God and the ultimate purpose of being used for His glory.
Romans 8:14
For all who are led by the Spirit of God are sons of God.
Judges 7:19-21
So, Gideon and the hundred men who were with him came to the outskirts of the camp at the beginning of the middle watch, when they had just set the watch. And they blew the trumpets and smashed the jars that were in their hands. 20 Then the three companies blew the trumpets and broke the jars. They held in their left hands the torches, and in their right hands the trumpets to blow. And they cried out, “A sword for the Lord and for Gideon!” 21 Every man stood in his place around the camp, and all the army ran. They cried out and fled.
