The Point

Following God’s plan will require change in your life, but it’s worth it.
The Bible Meets Life

Whether or not you are a detailed planner, you likely have goals and an idea of where you’d like to go in life. We can be resistant when someone else’s plans collide with ours, and our plans are disrupted. But changes also can be welcome, especially if they come from God. Joseph had a plan for his life with Mary, but God stepped in and changed that plan. All of us benefit from the plan God gave to Joseph.
The Setting

Matthew was a disciple of Jesus who wrote to explain the gospel to non-Christian Jews. He focused upon those aspects of Jesus’ ministry that would speak to his own people. In typical Jewish fashion, he began his Gospel with a genealogy that spanned the distance from Abraham to Jesus (Matthew 1:1-16). Matthew then located the birth of Christ in the context of a Jewish family and began to tell the story of Jesus’ parents, beginning with Jesus’ father.
How do you initially respond when you hear, ‘There’s been a change of plans’?
What can we learn from Joseph’s initial response regarding Mary’s situation?

What options exist when we find ourselves where we didn’t expect to be?
What do the names given for the Messiah in these verses reveal about His purpose?

What makes it hard to set our plans aside to follow God’s plans?
When have you seen someone trust God even when it didn’t make sense?

What are some practical ways we can follow Joseph’s example of obedience?

How have you experienced God’s plan being better than your plan?
Live It Out

Adjust your thinking. Do you have a perspective on something that is out of sync with God’s point of view? Pray for God to help you see life from His perspective. Pray for the mind of Christ (1 Corinthians 2:16) to be fully developed in you.

Adjust your trust. Adjusting your life to God involves trust. When we believe God is sovereign, wise, and loving, we are more motivated to trust Him. Review areas of your life and find ways to trust God fully.

Adjust your obedience. Obedience is the essence of trust. If you trust who God is, it is only natural to do what He says. What is a specific area in your life where you need to obey God this week? If you hesitate, you may miss all of God’s plan.
Wrap It Up

When we trust God in everything, we can trust He will be there for the outcomes.
