Are you a hypocrite?

A hypocrite was traditionally an Ancient Greek actor who wore several different masks to play different characters.

Like these actors we all tend to be hypocrites, presenting a better version of ourselves in public than is true of us in private.

In part 3 of our series “The Sermon on the Mount”, Jesus confronts this type of hypocrisy in his followers.
The three pillars of Jewish spiritual discipline were giving to the needy, prayer and fasting. Jesus assumed that his followers would also engage in these practices.

The key question Jesus is asking when we give, pray and fast is, who is watching?

Or, maybe more specifically, who do we hope is watching?
Righteousness Practiced to be Seen by Others
If our motive is to be caught in the act of righteousness by others, Jesus warns that human praise is all the reward we will get. God does not reward that kind of “spiritual” behaviour.

Who do you hope notices when you give, pray, fast or engage in some other kind of “spiritual” behaviour?
Righteousness Practiced in Secret
Jesus taught his followers to deny themselves human praise and practice their righteousness in a different way.

When we give to the needy, pray, fast or engage in any righteous we should do it as secretly as possible, for God’s eyes only. God rewards those whose righteous acts are for him and not for our own glory.

The Father sees what we do in secret and rewards our devotion to Him. Is that enough for us?
What covert act of righteousness are going to become part of your life this week?

1. Hypocrite is a strong word in our culture, but we are all hypocrites to some degree. We all won’t the world to think that we are better people than we truly are. In what was do you try and hide your brokenness and display your righteousness to the world?

2. Whose approval do you most crave?
3. Imagine your private devotional practice (the things you do to connect with God on your own) and your public prayer and worship balancing on a scale. What weighs the most? Why?

4. What would it look like for you personally to go cold turkey on seeking approval from others for how “righteous” you are?

5. How can you build secret acts of righteousness into your own life?

6. Pray for each other that we would be given grace to live for God’s approval alone.
Pray for your life group, and others you may feel led to pray for, that we may know God more, and grow ever closer to Him.
