Walk this Way is more than a song by Aerosmith and Run DMC. It is an invitation to move in a particular direction.
This next six weeks we are focusing on how do we live as disciples of Jesus. There can be a difference between being a Christian and being a disciple of Jesus. For many Christian means I believe certain things. I do certain things. Being a disciple of Jesus means being formed in the image of your Rabbi.
One of the primary things that forms us is our habits, our practices. Through these five weeks we are focusing not only how we can become more full devoted followers of Jesus, but also how we can invite others to be doing that as well.
One of the interesting character of the New Testament is Thomas. He is often known as doubting Thomas but he is more than a label. Look at these three encounters about him:
Encounter 1 - John 11. This is the amount of the death of Lazarus. Jesus tells his disciples that he is dead. Jesus is going there to wake him up. The problem is it was risking for Jesus and the disciple to go to this location. Thomas speaks up that they should go so they can die with Jesus. That description speaks of his courage and commitment to the person of Jesus.
Encounter 2 - John 14. Jesus just finishes saying he is going away to prepare a place for his disciples. This is at the last supper. Jesus says they know they place where He is going. Thomas asks a legitimate question, "We don't know the place where you are going?" Thomas is an honest inquirer. Help me understand.
Encounter 3 - John 20. This is when Jesus appears to the disciples but Thomas is not there. He states Unless I see the nails marks in his hands and side, I won't believe. A week later Jesus appears to them and Thomas. Jesus says to touch his hands and side. Jesus invited him to move past his doubt and believe. Then Thomas declares "My Lord and My God." This is worship
Worship is not just about singing songs, going to church. Worship is declaring Jesus is Lord and living that each day of life. God doesn't want part of you, He wants all of you. I wonder how Thomas says "My Lord and My God." Does he kneel in surrender?
Application: As we think about our worship, there are two invitations for next steps:
1) Worship Engagement - Simply point, is attending a worship service weekly a priority? Is it something to aspire to or a core conviction? Each week, corporate worship centers us on the things that are most important. It reminds us to not worship our stuff, our favorite team, our comforts. Worship is putting Jesus first.
Maybe a next step is committing to attending worship every week. If you travel, then watch online or find a local worship expression near you.
2) Worship as Lifestyle - Each moment of each day can be an opportunity to say I am available to you God. That means being available to be used of God, through your time, your money, your energy your love.
Maybe a next step is pausing to pray more than just the morning. Maybe it is listening, or giving above your tithes to other important ministries.
Our Mission at Central is to Connect, Grow, Serve, Give and Go so that all may know God's love through Jesus Christ. Let us live this way individually and as a community of faith together.
