Central Question: How do I break the cycle of generational sin?
Central Truth: It may not have started with us, but through Jesus it can stop with us.
Scripture: Romans 6:1-14
· Every family tree that carries blessing also carries brokenness.
· Some battles didn’t begin with us, but they’ve shown up in us
· What I excuse in myself, I risk normalizing in my kids.
Jesus doesn’t just forgive our past. He changes what has authority over our future.
1. What was handed to me.
Jesus didn’t erase my history. He gave me a new identity stronger than my history.
2. What showed up in me.
My history may explain my reaction, but it doesn’t excuse my response.
3. What I’m handing down.
What I refuse to surrender to Jesus, I risk reproducing in my kids.
4. What can begin with me.
You can’t change the generations before you, but through Jesus you can influence the generations after you..

Discussion Questions:
What are some positive things your family handed down to you, and what are some unhealthy patterns you’ve had to recognize in yourself?
Romans 6 says that in Christ we’re given a new life. What does it look like practically to honor where you came from without being controlled by it?
What’s one pattern in your life that you’ve been tempted to excuse as “just who I am”? What might it look like to surrender that pattern to Jesus instead?
The sermon says, “My history may explain my reaction, but it doesn’t excuse my response.” How does that challenge the way we think about our past, our wounds, and our responsibility today?
If the people closest to you copied the way you handle pressure, conflict, forgiveness, anger, or faith, what would you be glad they learned—and what would you want to change?
What’s one thing you want to stop with you, and what’s one new thing you want to begin with you because of Jesus? What’s one practical step you can take this week?
