Life Verses & Catchphrases
Welcome to the Life Verse and Catchphrases Series! The Words We Carry. The Truth That Carries Us. A Life Verse Is... A truth from God’s Word that becomes a personal compass, a source of courage, a reminder of identity, or a declaration against the lies of the world. A life verse is a verse out of the Bible that especially resonates with you and that has inspired you in some meaningful way. It has become a kind of focus point for you, a life mantra, or a kind of statement or even a counter-culture protest of sorts to battle some erroneous worldview assumption. What verse do you keep coming back to—and why? How did you come to settle on this verse? How has God used this verse in your life?

Proverbs 3:5-6
*
OPENING
Every parent eventually has to do something they don't want to do: let go. There comes a moment when you realize you can't walk the road for your children anymore. You can give them advice. You can pray for them. You can make a great proposal for their life. You can load the car. You can even check the tires one more time. But eventually, they have to take off themselves. That's when we rely on God and Proverbs 3:5-6
*
CONTEXTUALIZATION
The wisdom teacher combines command and reward in rapid-fire sequence in Prov 3:1–12. Six couplets. The odd verses are the admonitions; the even verses are the rewards. Our focus is 3:5-6.
*
This life verse includes a call to faith, trust in the Lord with all your heart.
*
It's a summons to self-denial, do not lean on your own understanding.
*
And it's a mandate for obedience, in all your ways acknowledge Him.
*
And it says all of those things in two very tight sentences.
*
PROPOSITION
“What are you leaning on—and can it actually hold you?”
*
God directs our paths as we respond to Him in FOUR ESSENTIAL WAYS. There are FOUR WAYS Proverbs 3:5–6 teaches us to lean on the Lord so we can have His direction in life - and he will make your paths straight. God has a path and there’s a way for us to navigate to it and on it. God wants us to know his ways, his divine perspective, so we don’t take the wrong road.
*
OUTLINE
FOUR WAYS to lean... God directs the paths of those who…
*
Trust or Lean Completely: Put your full weight on the Lord
*
Think or Lean Carefully: Refuse to make your own understanding the final authority
*
Acknowledge or Lean Continually: Invite God into every area of life
*
Submit or Lean Obediently: Take the next step before you see the entire path
*
CONCLUSION
Maybe you've gotten off the path. Maybe somewhere along the way, you started leaning on yourself instead of trusting the Lord. Maybe you followed your own understanding—and now you're living with so many potholes and detours. Maybe you've acknowledged God in certain areas but quietly shut Him out of others. Maybe you know the next step of obedience, but you've been standing still, waiting for God to give you a map when He's already given you a step.
*
And perhaps that's where the good news of Proverbs 3:5–6 becomes even better. Because the Bible is not ultimately a story about people who always stayed on the right path. It's the story of a God who came looking for people who had lost their way. The reason we get off the path is not simply that we occasionally make bad decisions. The deeper problem is that we naturally want to lean on ourselves. We want to be our own authority, choose our own direction, and control our own lives.
*
But the Gospel asserts that God did not stand at the end of the road and shout, “Find your way back to Me!” He came to us. Jesus said, “I am the way.” Think about that. Christianity is not primarily about finding the right path. It is about finding the One who is the Way. Put your full weight on Him. Stop making yourself the final authority. Invite Him into the parts of your life you've kept closed off. And when you can't see the path ahead— keep your eyes on Jesus.
