The Point:
Cropped: Showing Grace Means We Ignore Sin

Object Lesson: Water is both solid AND liquid
Icebreaker - what are your favorite AND combinations? For example, peanut butter AND jelly, Netflix AND chill, etc.
** Do you personally lean more towards truth (rules) or grace (forgiveness) in your interactions with people? **
Focus Verse. Have someone read John 8:11 - "Then neither do I condemn you, " Jesus declared. "Go now and leave your life of sin."
As a group, act out the scene from John 8:3-11 regarding the woman caught in adultery. You'll need a narrator, Jesus, the woman (fully clothed, please!) and the Pharisees.
Sean taught that the winner in the discussion of grace AND truth is the AND! Let's discuss.
1. Grace AND Truth is confrontation. Have someone read Ephesians 4:14-15.
** A. Share a time when someone called out a sin in your life. Did they do it with grace AND truth? **
B. Share a time when YOU called out the sin in someone else's life. Did you do it with grace AND truth?
B. Share a time when YOU called out the sin in someone else's life. Did you do it with grace AND truth?
2. Grace AND Truth is compassion. Have someone Luke 15:20-24.
C. It's easy for us to expect compassion FROM others when we miss the mark, but we tend to struggle to extend compassion TO others when they are in the wrong. Be honest - how would you respond if your son or daughter did exactly what the prodigal son did?
D. Is there someone in your life who showed you compassion ("I still love you, I'm still here for you") even though they knew you were in the wrong?
D. Is there someone in your life who showed you compassion ("I still love you, I'm still here for you") even though they knew you were in the wrong?
3. Grace AND Truth is correction. Have someone read 1 Corinthians 5:9-13.
E. The goal of CORRECTION is to effect change. "Judging" in this verse does not mean condemning someone, but rather telling someone that something needs to change in their life. Why is it important that we correct our fellow believers?
4. Grace AND Truth is obligation. Have someone read Galatians 6:1-3.
F. "You who are godly should gently and humbly help that person onto the right path." Do you consider yourself godly enough to be obligated to speak up when you see another believer in sin? Why or why not?
5. Grace AND Truth is submission. Have someone read Romans 5:20-6:2.
** G. Grace AND Truth also applies to how we deal with sin in our own lives. Is there an area in your life where you are offering yourself too much grace and not enough truth? **
Prayer 4U - Pray for the people of MC3 that we would be full of grace and truth towards each other and toward ourselves.
Guided Prayer - (Leader, include the following in your prayer time). Jesus, thank you for your example of what grace and truth looks like. Thank you that you love us just the way we are, but you love us too much to leave us the way we are. Give us that same compassion so that we are willing to confront others when we see them in sin. And let us grow in relationships with each other as we collectively pursue you! In your holy name, AMEN.
