Title: "Condemned" (06-14-26)

The Point:
Cropped: If You Commit Suicide, You Will Go to Hell
Completed: If You Believe in Jesus, You Will Be in Heaven

Object Lesson: fine print on packages
** Icebreaker
-Have you ever seen any funny fine print on an item?
OR
-Have you missed/ignored fine print on something and it caused a problem?**
NOTE: Today's topic is a bit more sensitive than others, so please be respectful of others who may have dealt with suicide, either directly or indirectly.
Have you ever heard or been taught that those who commit suicide go to hell? Why do you think this has been taught this way?
Focus Verse. Have someone slowly read 1 John 1:9.
There are three main verbs in this verse, what are they?
**Before this week's Point, what did the word "confess" mean to you?**
1. The first verb is our part: In the Point, Sean explained that the word for "confess" in 1 John, means to agree with God. How is confession "agreeing with God"?

2. In context, John isn't writing about confessing our individual sinS, but our SIN in general (see 1 John 1:8,10). What's the difference?
Why is this an important distinction?
3. The second and third verbs are God's part: What does God promise to do if we confess/admit that we are sinners?

4. Are there any sins that you think God can't or maybe shouldn't forgive? Why do you feel that way?
5. According to 1 John 1:9, what will God forgive? What won't He forgive?

What will He purify? What won't God purify? How do you know that?

Just to clarify: will God forgive the sin of suicide?
Shifting gears a bit, in the Point we learned 5 reasons Why You Matter:
•God Made You -Psalm 139:13-18
•God Is With You -Psalm 34:18
•God Cares About You -1 Peter 5:7
•God Died For You -Romans 3:23
•God Has a Purpose for You! -Philippians 1:21-25

Let's zoom in on that last reason for a few minutes...
Have someone read Philippians 1:21.

6. What was Paul's struggle here?
Why are both of these GOOD things in his mind?

7. Have you ever struggled with Paul's conflict? What has that looked like for you?
As Paul continues to share his struggle between the tension of living for Jesus HERE, but being with Jesus IN ETERNITY, he comes to an important conclusion.

8. Have someone read Philippians 1:22-25 out loud. What conclusion does Paul come to in verse 25?
9. Have you ever considered that God has a purpose for YOU, HERE on this earth in the lives of others? Why or why not?
**Let's close our time sharing some "Redemption Arcs" or "It's a Wonderful Life Moments" (which are a type of God Moments!):

-Who are people who influenced your life for the better because God placed them on this earth? (think: parents, friends, teachers, mentors, etc.)

-Who are the people who's lives would be in a bad place if YOU weren't on this earth? (think: children, spouse, friends, church family, etc.)
[This may feel a bit arrogant, but remember this is God's purpose for you, not yours!]**
Prayer 4U - Have everyone write down the name of a person that God used to influence them in a positive way [they probably just shared the name of that person].
-If they are still living, pray for that person this week.
-If they have passed, ask God to help you influence others the way that they influenced you.
Guided Prayer - (Leader, include the following in your prayer time). Father, thank you for sending Jesus to forgive ALL of our sin, not because of anything we have done to earn it, but simply by confessing/admitting our sin and need of a Savior.
Thank you for giving us a purpose here on this earth, to make a difference in the lives of others. Help us to remember that when we feel low. In Jesus' name, Amen.
