Starting 3/29 THIS SUNDAY!!!

This story is in all four gospel accounts. This tells us this moment is important.
What is the significance of the palm branch?

Represented victory.

Symbolized goodness, well-being, grandeur, and steadfastness.
Palm branches were regarded as tokens of joy and triumph.

Kings and conquerors were welcomed with palm branches being strewn before them and waved in the air.

The palm branch was a symbol of Jewish nationalism.
Why did they lay down their garments?
Laying garments down was an act of homage to royalty.
What is the significance of the donkey?
It was a fulfillment of prophecy.
We have palm branches, garments, and a donkey. Is there more?
The Situation: Rome occupied Jerusalem
Putting it all together.
Jerusalem occupied by oppressive Roman government.
Jesus rides into Jerusalem on a donkey’s colt as a conquering king. Palm branches being waved in celebration as a sign of victory.
Garments being laid before Jesus in submission to his authority.

Crowds gather and praise Jesus.
The people of Israel believe this is a fulfillment of prophecy! John 12 references Zephaniah 3.
Why did Jesus ride into Jerusalem the way he did?

It was an act of war.
But what does this mean for us?
So how do we respond to Palm Sunday, today?

The proper response is praise.
BUT HE MIGHT NOT SAVE...
LIKE WE WANT HIM TO SAVE.
The proper response is STILL praise.
